I intend to help clients address their attachment and developmental trauma, often at the root of anxiety, depression, and other challenges, using NARM (NeuroAffective Relational Model). Its heartfelt approach utilizes the shared human experience to support the client’s development and growth. . Within the modality’s framework, I create a collaborative environment where clients can reconnect to their heart’s desire as we address internal obstacles. Sometimes we all need a little help. No one has life all figured out. We are all a work in progress. That is especially true of young adults transitioning from high school into college, or from college into the working world. Relationships with parents are changing, romantic relationships may begin or end, friendships change, and we may grow apart from people who we thought we'd be friends with forever. These are challenging times to be alive, and sometimes it's helpful to talk about what you're going through with an objective third party, a therapist, someone to validate your feelings and give honest feedback in a kind, gentle manner. I help my patients learn healthy coping skills and try different strategies to deal with whatever mental health challenges they are facing. With 18 years experience, I'm sure I can find some strategies that will help you too. Please feel free to reach out when you are ready!
Young adulthood is a time of transitions, growth and self discovery. While many new challenges can be exciting, this time of exploration can also become overwhelming. There can be a lot of “shoulds”, comparisons and uncertainty. My office is a safe space to process through all of these thoughts and feelings without feeling judged or criticized. Together we work to figure out a path to help you build the necessary skills and insights to launch into the adult life you are seeking. I love working with young adults and college students to help them embrace this season of their life. As a Registered Yoga Teacher I value the connection between the mind and body and what stress does to our overall well being. With that being said- if yoga/meditation/mindfulness is not your thing it does not need to be involved in your treatment. I always work to creatively match the evidenced based treatment modalities I am trained in to fit a client’s unique goals and strengths. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me at 585-432-0717 or through email at maryvanvoorhislcsw@gmail.com to learn more about my practice or to set up a brief initial call to see if my practice might be a good fit for you.
I'm a clinical psychologist and a trained psychoanalyst. I believe that what promotes growth and mental health is the process of putting real but hard to see aspects of your experience into words. This decreases their power and brings them more to heel for you. This is different from challenging thoughts or skill building. You as the patient should have clear evidence in therapy that you're coming to understand yourself better and more fully. Old, stuck ways of thinking should slowly give way to the ability to think more effectively about what is and what can be. Your sense of 'you' should grow wider and more secure, and your ability live and act with purpose of your choosing should slowly build.
