Therapists for college students near New York, NY
“The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but building the new.”-Socrates I am a bilingual (English/Spanish) clinical social worker with 15 years experience of working with adults and adolescents. I believe therapy is a tool used to help guide people in achieving the life goals they set for themselves. Whether you have a teenager experiencing depression or anxiety; is conflicted about identity, or are an adult feeling stuck, having relationship conflicts, employment stress or grief/loss; I will work with you to learn skills to manage life’s challenges while identifying past experiences that may be driving the decisions you make today. Therapy provides a safe and supportive space to address the challenges of life, learn how to manage and cope with psychological distress, while gaining the skills to live a happier more fulfilling life. As your therapist I will provide a safe, non-judgmental, supportive, and warm environment to foster your unique strengths. I am trained in various evidenced based modalities including CBT, Trauma Focused-CBT for adolescents, Problem-Solving Therapy, and Interpersonal Psychotherapy for Depressed Adolescents (IPT-A). I tailor our sessions based on your specific needs and drawing from my extensive work in the mental health field. I offer a free 15 minute phone consultation to explore whether we would be a good fit.

Hello! My name is Abigayle Bennett, but you can call me Abi. I am in my second year of my Master’s of Social Work at Binghamton University and hold an Associate’s in Human Services and a Bachelor’s in Psychology with a minor in Education. I have been working in children’s and family services for the majority of my career, and hope to eventually open a Child and Family Development Center and offer an inclusive space for families to seek tools and resources to improve their family’s mental well-being. I specialize in areas such as anxiety, mood disorders, parenting and family issues, relationships, self-esteem, self-harm, lgbtq+ youth, and domestic/sexual abuse. I strive to create a laid-back, open, and approachable environment in our sessions. I understand that starting therapy can be daunting, but I aim to make our therapeutic relationship as comfortable and supportive as possible. My goal is to be someone you feel at ease talking to so that you can freely share and explore your thoughts and feelings. I know how intimidating it can be to bare your soul to a stranger, so I want to work together to build a strong therapeutic relationship so we can tackle your needs as a team. I firmly believe that mental health has to start from a sort of ground-up perspective. In order to control your feelings, emotions, and reactions, you have to understand them and be able to respond to them using tools that meet you where you’re at. I practice primarily using CBT, DBT, mindfulness, attachment theory, and family systems theory. In our sessions, we will use an eclectic mix of various therapeutic frameworks to best meet your needs. In session, this may look like guided meditations, processing past traumas, exploring family dynamics, and cognitive reprogramming techniques. By utilizing a mix of modalities, we can work together to find ways to best respond to the difficulties and struggles you may be facing, and hopefully overall improve your quality of life.

I’m a social worker with nearly 20 years of experience helping people navigate life’s challenges with more clarity and confidence. I work especially well with young adults facing stress, anxiety, relationship issues, life transitions, neurodivergence, and the pressure to “figure it all out.” Therapy with me is real, practical, and judgment-free. It’s a space to slow down, feel understood, and build tools you can actually use in everyday life. You’re not broken — just human. And you don’t have to sort it out alone.

Healing Words Psychotherapy is a group of multi-cultural, multi-lingual (English and Mandarin at the moment) therapists that come from all walks of life, but we share one common passion: to connect with other human beings and to make a meaningful impact. Our clinicians have accumulated 10 years of experiences working with college students and young adults, and we focus on issues such as: adjustment difficulty, academic stress, social anxiety, relationship issues, identity development, etc.
My theoretical orientation is integrative, which means I use a combination of humanistic, solution-focused, person-centered, cognitive behavioral, mindfulness based /contemplative approaches, stress management, and insight oriented techniques-depending on the needs of the client. I understand how critical the relationship between client and therapist is to the success of the therapeutic experience. As such, my hope always is to provide a warm, empathetic, supportive, and nonjudgmental environment-one in which my clients will feel safe and encouraged to build trust and work towards self-empowerment. To that end, I employ a collaborative, strengths-oriented approach. My style is warm, compassionate, interactive, and I provide ongoing feedback. I believe in the power of therapy and in every individual's right to experience happiness, meaning, and fulfillment. Please contact me if you have more specific questions before making an appointment. I look forward to working with you!
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. My goal as a therapist is to help you achieve your goals and assist you in resolving or overcoming any challenges you may be facing. I have a no nonsense, solutions focused approach to therapy- the goal is not to have you in therapy forever, but rather to tackle the problem and then go out and live your best life. Deciding to seek help can be really challenging, so congratulations on taking that step! Everyone has a unique story and deserves an individualized approach to care. Once we decide to work together, we’ll act as partners in your therapeutic journey, but keep in mind therapy requires that YOU need to put in the work! I’ll be there to listen to you, and to really challenge you. Of course I will support you along the way. In our first session you will have the opportunity to share your story and what you hope to achieve in therapy. I will share my approach to therapy and how I may be able to assist you. From there, if you chose to work with me, we’ll work together in the sessions that follow to make these goals a reality for you.
