Welcome to A New Way Mental Health Counseling Services, PLLC. I am Sharee Gunner, Licensed Mental Health Counselor in New York with 15 years of experience supporting individuals with life's challenges. I have experience with diagnostic evaluations, diagnosing, treatment planning as well as individual and group therapy. I enjoy working with individuals from a wide range of backgrounds with varying challenges, including, but not limited to anxiety, depression, PTSD, ADHD, trauma and parenting support. My counseling style is warm and client focused. I believe in meeting each individual where they are and adjusting the counseling style to meet their needs. I believe in being respectful, empathetic and culturally competent. I allow the client to take the lead when appropriate and support them with finding the solutions. I am excited to get to know you and support you in meeting your therapeutic goals. It can be difficult to take this step, but here you are! Let's get started on your journey to health and wellness.
I am a Bilingual/Bicultural therapist who takes pride in working with clients of diverse backgrounds. As your therapist my goal is to work with you in a collaborative way, using a culturally humble lens and awareness that "one size does not fit all." In my practice I work with Adolescents and Young Adults in an effort towards identifying solutions that promote growth, healing and life satisfaction through use of the therapeutic relationship. I treat individuals with a range of life struggles including anxiety, depression, trauma, loss and life transitions. Utilizing a collaborative approach and evidence based treatments, I will tailor my technique based on your individual needs. Aspects of mindfulness, trauma-informed and insight-oriented approaches may also be used. I am a compassionate and thoughtful clinician that is committed to providing a safe and non-judgmental therapeutic space. My goal is to help you find relief through developing an ability to manage and cope with the complexities and challenges one experiences with everyday life.
I’m a licensed psychotherapist specializing in the treatment of addiction and trauma. Much of my work has included working with adolescents, adults and families who are challenged by anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues. In addition, I have experience working with the LGTBQ community, life coaching, and eating disorders. Believing you are the expert in your life my hope is to act as a beacon of light on a path that sometimes goes dark. My success in treating clients stems from my approach which is straight forward and solution-focused to help clients move forward rather than staying stuck in their challenge areas. To my future clients: In Harry Potter, Prisoner of Azkaban, Dumbledore says ‘Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light. ‘”
I love working with people who feel drawn to explore their inner world, who sense there’s something meaningful waiting to be discovered but aren’t sure where to start. They long to feel more connected to themselves and others, and are looking for gentle guidance to help them get there. They want to understand the heart of what keeps them stuck in old patterns and finally feel the freedom of being their true selves. My counseling approach is primarily influenced by gestalt, psychodynamic, and mindfulness-based therapy, as well as inner child work and the expressive arts. I believe that living with greater authenticity and wholeness starts with noticing and honoring all parts of ourselves, and taking loving actions that support our body, heart, and mind. When we do that, life begins to feel a little easier. We become less reactive, our relationships grow healthier, and we can meet challenges with more clarity and resilience. None of us are meant to walk this path alone. Having someone beside you who truly understands your struggles and believes in your capacity to grow can make all the difference. My own recovery journey, along with my education, training, and years of working with those navigating mental health challenges and addiction, allows me to meet clients with both skill and heartfelt understanding. Whether you are just beginning or well along your path, I am here to support you in moving toward a more whole and integrated life.
I specialize in LGBTQIA+ adults and adolescents with attention to all intersecting identities and lived experience connected to race, ethnicity, religious background, immigration status, ability, socioeconomic status, and trauma history. Particularly in these upending times, I seek to provide a reliable healing space by helping clients find genuine, compassionate connection with oneself and others. Some of the ways I work with clients is to become aware of connections between current challenges and past experience, explore identities freely with attention to each person's unique circumstances, identify needs around interpersonal connection and boundaries, understand the impact of systemic oppression and intergenerational trauma, and foster hope for the future. I take my work very seriously, but also naturally use humor as a way to explore and connect. Therapy needs to be a safe space to be messy and broken, but can also be used for playful curiosity and creativity.

My work is based on the belief that caring for our mental health is an essential part of our overall wellbeing. I collaborate with my clients to help them understand their strengths and gain insight into themselves, experiment with new ways of interacting with others, and learn new skills to work towards cultivating fulfilling lives. As part of this process I strive to create a warm, empathic environment, and I prioritize developing therapeutic relationships with clients based on authenticity and trust. I draw from client-centered therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and mindfulness-based therapy techniques in my work. As a generalist, I am experienced in helping individuals with a broad range of concerns including anxiety/stress, mood difficulties, identity, career and school concerns, life transitions, and relationship difficulties. I have trained and worked in several college counseling centers over the years, including large state schools as well as smaller private schools. I enjoy working with both undergraduate and graduate students. If you are interested in the possibility of working together, please EMAIL me to inquire about a free phone consultation.
I provide trauma-informed and strength-based psychodynamic therapy to adults seeking to understand the personal, intergenerational, and political factors impacting their mental health. I support my clients in the process of healing from past experiences so that they are able to feel their emotions more fully, develop healthier and deeper connections, and make empowered choices about their futures. I specialize in LGBTQ+ and BIPOC-affirming care, couple's therapy, and perinatal mental health. I use a relational approach to support my clients in becoming more curious about their inner lives, more in touch with their hopes and desires, and clearer about the barriers they are facing to meeting their goals. I believe therapy is about helping us to feel more emotionally resilient in the face of any obstacle. Overall, my main goal is to create a safe relationship so that you feel you have true support on your healing journey.

I have had particular success in treating anxiety, depression, trauma, substance abuse/addiction, and most mental health issues that may impede one's ability to achieve their potential. You try so hard to keep the peace. You don't want to "rock the boat", and desperately want others to like you. After years of bending over backwards, your nerves are so much on edge that others have called you "too sensitive" or "overly emotional". In relationships with family, friends, partners, and coworkers, you feel powerless and plagued with doubt. Overthinking and spiraling thoughts are your new norm. But recently, you're realizing that you've been putting other people first for years, so much so, that you've forgotten to take care of yourself. That's where our work together comes in. Are you ready to learn to trust your own voice? Are you ready to shed the message that you have to please others to have happy relationships? Are you ready to stop overthinking? And most importantly, are you ready to begin taking care of yourself, the way you've been taking care of others for years? Invest in yourself and take that next step by clicking "Email Me" button or giving me a call. I offer a free phone consultation, and see clients in-person in my Oneonta Office and via telehealth anywhere in New York. I specialize in working with college students, and have experience in working with adults of all ages. I look forward to hearing from you!
Hello, I help people with gaining clarity and understanding of themselves, their future, purpose, and meaning. Additionally, I can be helpful dealing with challenges in the present that get in the way of getting where you want to go. Sometimes it can be difficult to connect with our brigheness or gold and it takes an exploration of what is dark or shadowy in our lives or in ourselves to get to a place where we can shine once again. I have experience with this as well. Please reach out to ask any questions or find out more about what I have to offer.
