Choosing a therapist and getting started itself can be overwhelming. I believe that treatment must be specific to the person and the problem and be based on a broad array of available clinical modalities and interventions. These interventions are always provided with safe, supportive and professional care. I have over twenty years experience as a psychologist and as a supervisor and trainer of therapists from all of the mental health fields. I head a group private practice with many available resources for adults and children. I am a leader in the field of abuse and trauma as well as sexuality and relationships. Some of my credentials include: Diplomate and Clinical Supervisor of the American Board of Sexology; Diplomate and Certified Sex Therapist of the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors, and Therapists; and, Master Addiction Counselor by the National Certification Commission for Addiction Professionals.

My approach is influenced by C.G. Jung, Viktor Frankl (Man's Search for Meaning) Socratic dialogue, Buddhism and Quaker meetings. I work best with the person who sees their life as a journey of self-discovery. I will help you uncover the solutions that you already have and see the problematics of those solutions. I will help you listen to your muse, interpret your dreams, identify your interpersonal patterns and face the fears and anxieties that haunt you. I will treat your troubles with the utmost respect because they help you learn and grow. Gratitude softens pain. I find parallels between creativity & spiritual inspiration.

Loss is a quiet grief that doesn't conform to the world's pace, especially when we need stillness as well as acknowledgment. Whether your loss involves a companion animal, a relationship, a career path, or a life that looks OK to others but feels hollow to you, your circumstances deserve to be honored and processed with care. For many years, I have been drawn to working with people who carry more than they can say out loud. Before becoming a therapist, I worked as a Licensed Veterinary Technician, where I sat with families as they navigated some of their toughest moments. Those experiences, as well as my own, inspired me to become a therapist and have informed and shaped how I understand deep pain. I employ a variety of professional modalities, along with humor and a touch of sharp wit, when working with clients, centering them as they move forward with their lives. Grief is not a problem to solve, regardless of the type of loss you're experiencing, what others say, or what hustle culture expects from you.

Hello and welcome! I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker dedicated to supporting college students as they navigate the emotional, academic, and personal challenges of this season of life. College can be a time of growth and discovery, but it can also bring stress, anxiety, identity questions, relationship concerns, and past wounds to the surface. As a faith-centered, trauma-informed therapist, I am committed to helping individuals find emotional healing, clarity, and peace. Therapy is a space where you don’t have to have everything figured out; it’s a place to slow down, reflect, and begin healing at your own pace. My approach is warm, compassionate, and collaborative, grounded in the belief that true transformation happens when we feel safe, supported, and truly seen. Together, we will work to build resilience, deepen self-understanding, and develop healthy coping tools so you can move forward with confidence and hope.

Hello, and thank you for taking the time to connect! You likely wouldn’t be reading this if you weren’t struggling with the pressures of life, and the demands placed upon you from both internal and external sources. I would like to take the time to acknowledge that where you are in your journey to find help is challenging and I am here to make that process as smooth as I am able. The first thing to know about me is that I attempt to live my life in an authentic manner that honors my truth, self-identity, and worldview; while helping others discover what that may look like for them. Some of the roles I fill in my life are husband, father, son, sibling, friend, mentor, and helper. While each of these roles is unique and requires special attention, they each contribute to my passion in life and therapeutic approach. I began my journey to becoming a therapist almost a decade ago, when I realized my previous career in healthcare management was not aligned with my passions and purpose in life. I found myself running businesses for other people who were focused on profits and growth, but lacking a focus on people and connection, which is where my heart finds fulfillment. It was then I decided to change my career path and further my knowledge in the human experience. With the goal of learning how to connect with others in a meaningful way that can lead to growth and healing, I pursued my education and licensure as a clinical mental health counselor. Through a person centered approach, which employs a wide variety of evidence based interventions, I work with my clients to achieve their goals in a way that fits them individually. I believe that every person is unique and can benefit from unconditional acceptance and compassion. By creating this environment of acceptance, we are able to identify areas that you want to change and implement strategies tailored to your experience. I look forward to meeting you and having the opportunity to help you along your journey. Contact information: jwhitlock@truedirectionmhc.com or Phone: 845-264-2477

Finding a therapist is difficult, it’s scary, and it can be overwhelming – there are so many different providers just on this site! I’m here to help. I’ll work with you to closely examine your past and present experiences to better your future. I promise you that in our sessions, I will bring empathy, honesty, collaboration, and an open mind. So, how do I practice? I’m an integrative therapist – I’m trained in psychodynamic therapy, and I use tools from other treatments, such as cognitive behavioral therapy and dialectical behavior therapy, when appropriate and to better serve you. Basically, I believe we need to journey together to explore what internal anxieties, traumas or experiences are causing you discomfort, pain, or just a general feeling of being “stuck.” And I’ll also work practically with you in the here and now to provide further insight and relief. Ultimately, the relationship between therapist and client is incredibly important to helping you achieve your goals. I’ll do my best to make you feel safe, seen, and heard. I’m honored that you’re willing to give this a chance, and I invite you to reach out for a free consultation to see if we’re a good match.

If you've ever felt caught between worlds, or like your path hasn't quite followed the expected script, I get it — I've lived that too. I work with individuals of all ages who struggle with self-criticism, people-pleasing, and difficulty asserting their needs in relationships or life decisions. Working primarily from a psychodynamic approach, I help clients explore the deeper patterns and early experiences that shape their present thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Together, we'll investigate unexamined beliefs and influences that may be holding you back from living a life more fully like your own.

Oh college, it's "supposed" to be the best days of your life...whoever came up with that needs a serious reality check. I've been through it and have also worked with enough college students, young adults, and adults of all ages to say that for many of us, that statement is completely false. So please know that if you find that these are not the best days (or even if you feel that these are the worst days), you are not alone. There is nothing "wrong" with you and I am here to help. I unfortunately don't have a magic wand to transform your college experience into something you see in the movies, but I provide a combination of medication management and brief supportive therapy (a fancy way of saying I include some therapy during our 30 minute medication follow up appointments) that can help address concerns like depression, anxiety, obsessive thoughts, and mood disorders. I’ll work with you to create a personalized plan that meets your unique needs and helps you achieve your mental health goals. Talking about medication can be daunting. When I prescribe it, my goal isn’t to change who you are, but to help you rediscover what life can be like when your symptoms are managed. While medication won’t solve every issue, it can be a powerful tool alongside therapy and lifestyle changes, enabling you to reclaim your ability to thrive.

I love working with people who feel drawn to explore their inner world, who sense there’s something meaningful waiting to be discovered but aren’t sure where to start. They long to feel more connected to themselves and others, and are looking for gentle guidance to help them get there. They want to understand the heart of what keeps them stuck in old patterns and finally feel the freedom of being their true selves. My counseling approach is primarily influenced by gestalt, psychodynamic, and mindfulness-based therapy, as well as inner child work and the expressive arts. I believe that living with greater authenticity and wholeness starts with noticing and honoring all parts of ourselves, and taking loving actions that support our body, heart, and mind. When we do that, life begins to feel a little easier. We become less reactive, our relationships grow healthier, and we can meet challenges with more clarity and resilience. None of us are meant to walk this path alone. Having someone beside you who truly understands your struggles and believes in your capacity to grow can make all the difference. My own recovery journey, along with my education, training, and years of working with those navigating mental health challenges and addiction, allows me to meet clients with both skill and heartfelt understanding. Whether you are just beginning or well along your path, I am here to support you in moving toward a more whole and integrated life.

I work from a trauma-informed perspective, and the foundation of my work is grounded in talk therapy, CBT, and ACT. I offer holistic and complementary interventions that will support your overall well-being. Our work can be supported by incorporating somatic practices, when appropriate for you. Our relationship is central to this work and I hold a safe, non-judgmental, and present-moment space for you. I encourage you to let your guard down, and speak from your most authentic self, and I will do the same, so we can truly connect. My main areas of focus are in personal growth and optimal well-being, spirituality in terms of your search to answer those deeper, more meaningful questions in life, and helping you heal from relational wounds such as childhood neglect, psychological abuse, attachment wounds, and relationship conflict. I believe that anxiety, depression, self-criticism, stress, and some physical symptoms are the result of negative relationship experiences. The stories from our past can color our present moment in ways that no longer serve us. In our work together, I will support you as you learn to build trust in yourself, and in others. I know there is a brighter future for you, one that nourishes your soul and where peace comes naturally. I want to help you find it!

From the very beginning, with sensitivity and compassion, I strive to create a safe and nonjudgmental space in which you can express thoughts, feelings, dreams, and desires that you may feel unable to share elsewhere. I believe that constructive change occurs when we work collaboratively to develop insight into your current struggles; only then can we find ways to help you move forward. I have experience and interest in working with people with anxiety, trauma histories, and relationship issues. I enjoy working with creative people and those who wish to explore various aspects of their identities, including people who are LGBTQ+. Another of my strengths is in helping young people navigate the transition into adulthood. I have been practicing for more than ten years and I have specific training in psychodynamic therapy, mindfulness, and existentially oriented psychotherapy.

Welcome I'm Melissa and I'm so glad you landed here! I work with young adults who are feeling overwhelmed by life’s challenges—whether it’s relationship struggles, a constant worry loop that you can't get out of, low mood, struggles with food and body image, or difficulty with change. If you're reading this, you might be feeling out of balance or disconnected from what’s meaningful to you. Maybe you’re not sure what’s meaningful right now. You could be stuck in old patterns that no longer serve you, unsure about your next steps, or just know something feels "off" without being able to explain why. Or maybe you just need a safe space to explore it all. Whatever you're experiencing, it’s all valid—and it’s all welcome here.
