Hey Hey Hey! I’m Lenora Benson (She/Her/Hers), LICSW and I support black and ethnic minority women, in navigating the challenges and expectations imposed on them by the fallacy of the strong black women. I support all women in navigating the social expectations, stressors, and demands of being woman, as they intersect in all areas of racism, sexism, and patriarchism. I believe in the transformative power of therapy, because it has transformed me personally. As your therapist, I provide a safe, supportive, and judgement free space for you to explore your emotions, heal from past wounds, and journey from darkness to the light. My goals are to help those struggling with low self-esteem, people pleasing tendencies, and high-achieving perfectionism, dismantle the beliefs that keeps them stuck in patterns of behavior that leave them feeling like imposters; never good enough, never smart enough. Working with me will allow you to begin to make decisions for yourself that leave you feeling loved, worthy, and empowered.
Starting therapy can be a bit daunting and scary. Opening up and being vulnerable to a complete stranger can be challenging. That is why we make it my mission for the process to be pleasant and safe for you. Through various psychotherapy methods and collaborative treatment measures, our clients develop life-changing habits to help them cope with life’s various obstacles. Our therapy sessions are designed to dissect personal issues and provide clients with effective tools to help them see the glass as half full instead of half empty.
I hold a B. A. in English from Shanghai University and a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Teachers College, Columbia University. Over the last 19 years, I interned and practiced at various inpatient and outpatient settings, including Mt. Sinai-Roosevelt Hospital in NYC, Mt. Sinai-Beth Israel Medical Center in NYC, Amherst College Counseling Center in Amherst, MA, and the Community Health Center of Franklin County in Greenfield, MA. My own cross-cultural and cross-lingual experiences continue to shape the way I work. My “ideal patient” often shares these essential characteristics with me: bilingualism/biculturalism; deep-seated values for family, language, and culture; experiences of migration and adversity; an appreciation for authenticity and openness; and an unyielding curiosity about the inner workings of their own minds and those of others. I enjoy helping to support people as they navigate through the many different waves of life. I draw from a number of different treatment modalities, but most importantly, meet the client where they are at. While each individual's experience is unique, I regularly work with clients around topics related to anxiety, depression, obsessive thoughts, relationship concerns, sexuality, ADHD, life's transitions, familial conflict and many more. I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with a deep passion for working with young adults. I believe the early adult years are some of the most important—and often most misunderstood—seasons of life. Rather than something to simply “get through,” I view this stage as a powerful period of identity formation, growth, and possibility. I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. After spending a year living abroad, I went on to receive her Master of Science in Counseling Psychology from Northeastern University. Throughout my graduate training and post-master’s clinical work, I have supported youth and families across a range of settings, including in-home therapy, group home care, outpatient clinics, and municipal mental health. I understand that young adulthood can feel overwhelming—whether it’s anxiety, relationships, school, or simply trying to figure things out. Therapy with me is a place to slow things down and make sense of what’s going on. Sessions feel like a real conversation, where clients can explore their experiences, connect patterns, and develop strategies that are actually useful in everyday life. My goal is to create a space where clients feel comfortable, understood, and supported as they navigate this stage.
I have 20 years of working with clients on anxiety, burnout, and overwhelm. I love building new wellness practices that are accessible and sustainable -- identifying challenges, utilizing coping skills, and creating easy self-care practices for your day. It's wonderful to see clients shift from having distress at their symptoms to feeling confident about their ability to handle what life throws at them. After 20 years of working and learning, I utilize a wide range of approaches -- the classic Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to reframe unhelpful thoughts, somatic practices like yoga, Emotional Freedom Technique, and mindfulness and breath work to help settle the body, and Internal Family Systems (IFS) to get to know with caring and curiosity what is behind the triggers and automatic responses. My pronouns are she/her, and I strive to incorporate a feminist and anti-racist perspective into my work.
