Therapists for college students near New York, NY
A group of licensed clinicians providing quality, evidence-based therapy for adults, adolescents, families, and couples struggling with anxiety, depression, OCD, and related disorders.
At McGarril Mental Health Counseling, we believe that therapy works best when it's honest, well-informed, and deeply human. We founded this practice because we saw too many people struggling to find therapists who were both clinically excellent and genuinely present. Too often, mental health care feels either coldly clinical or lacks the evidence-based foundation that creates lasting change. We work with clients 18 and over, dealing with depression, anxiety, substance use, relationship issues, grief, eating disorders, and much more. We use EMDR, DBT, IFS, ACT, and CBT approaches. We're committed to offering something different: relational and trauma-informed therapy that combines rigorous training with authentic connection. We show up fully—bringing our expertise, our continued learning, and our humanity to every session.
College can be an incredible time of growth—but it can also be overwhelming. Between managing academics, friendships, identity shifts, and planning for your future, it’s normal to feel stretched thin, anxious, or unsure of yourself. Therapy can be a steady place to land—a space where you can process what’s coming up, sort through decisions, and feel more like yourself again. Whether you're navigating a recent breakup, feeling disconnected or burnt out, or just needing someone to talk to who gets it—you don’t have to figure it all out on your own. I work with college students just like you to help build confidence, increase self-awareness, and support your mental, emotional, and relational health in meaningful, real-life ways. Our work is collaborative, judgment-free, and always tailored to who you are and what you need most. If your parent or caregiver is supporting you financially through therapy, that's something we can absolutely talk about—together, we’ll make sure this feels like a valuable, empowering experience for you, and a meaningful investment in your wellbeing. Your life is happening now. Let’s help you feel more stable, supported, and ready to thrive in it. I’d love to hear more about where you’re at and how I can help. 📩 Jennifer@modernmft.com 📞 917.708.7088
I work with motivated clients on a variety of issues ranging from relationship challenges, adjusting to school, anxiety, and depression, to grief and loss, trauma, and complex family dynamics. I help clients learn to observe a wider range of variables that are contributing to problems and make meaningful behavioral changes. Anyone who is motived to find new solutions can benefit from this work, even in a short period of time.
Whether you are navigating a life transition, seeking to work through long-term issues and persistent patterns, or feeling stuck, I am here to support you in developing better ways of relating to yourself and others. I specialize in working with adults experiencing difficulties such as depression and anxiety, interpersonal challenges, professional issues, and identity and self-esteem concerns. I work primarily from a psychoanalytic/psychodynamic orientation and take an open-ended, exploratory approach. I believe this can help you develop insight about yourself and your experiences, sometimes in ways that have been outside your awareness, leading to greater self-acceptance and meaningful growth and change. I look forward to helping you become more curious about yourself and explore your inner life, and can consult with you to see if we would be a good fit.

When facing life's difficult challenges, it is good to know that there are places that you can turn to for help and guidance. However, finding a gay therapist can be anxiety producing because when people decide they would benefit from seeing a therapist, they are often experiencing significant upset in their lives. This is usually not the ideal moment to be dealing with the stress involved in finding someone with whom it feels safe and right to be vulnerable. I am aware of this and I want you to know that when we meet you will find yourself in a comfortable setting where you will be able to tell your story in strict confidence and without the worries of judgment or pressure of any type. We will discuss what you are interested in working on and how I will be able to help you. There will be no pressure to make any decisions or commitments. . I believe that therapy is a tool for fixing interpersonal problems, helping with painful life situations, tackling the "tough stuff", helping fine tune relationships, and getting back on the road to success in life. Do you hide your feelings from yourself and others, even without intending to? Maybe certain emotions were discouraged or disallowed during your childhood. Maybe you have endured traumatic experiences that make some feelings seem dangerous. Maybe you have been impacted by systemic inequality or prejudice as a result of your identity. For these reasons and others, you may avoid noticing and expressing sadness, loneliness, or anger. Instead, you try to keep yourself busy, mask your pain with jokes and laughter, or rationalize that “it’s not so bad” or “others have it worse.” Rejecting these parts of yourself comes at a very steep cost. Efforts to defend against your feelings can result in depression, anxiety, emptiness, and many other symptoms. Most importantly, remaining hidden compromises relationships. After all, it is hard to connect meaningfully with others when you are disconnected from yourself. Slowing down to make contact with your true feelings is worth the effort. In therapy, we will work together to observe and name the ways in which you have been ignoring your inner experience. As you become aware of your defenses, you will learn to deploy them flexibly rather than automatically. You will grow to tolerate and maybe even appreciate the feelings that used to feel frightening or shameful. With time, you can come to understand yourself better and feel a sense of ease being you.

Hello! I'm Dr. Brian Freidenberg. In therapy, I place the therapeutic relationship above all else. The relationship is the vehicle for change. I believe that a good therapist listens well; is empathic; and provides a safe, empowering, and judgement-free environment. The client and I form a partnership to help the client navigate this great adventure called life. My areas of expertise are ADDICTIONS (e.g. substances, sex, video games, phone, social media), ANXIETY, ADOLESCENCE, COLLEGE students, VETERANS, RELATIONSHIPS, TRAUMA, GROUPS, PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATIONS, and COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY. I enjoy working with adolescents and adults. I am trained as a culturally sensitive cognitive behavioral therapist. An important part of my practice is my appreciation and admiration of culture. My clients are diverse by age, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, race, and ethnicity. I offer EVENING and WEEKEND sessions. I am a clinical psychologist who also has an MSW. Thus, I am a very well-trained therapist who understands the unique impacts of culture, environment, and systems on people's lives. I have been mentored by therapists world renowned for their work in anxiety, addiction, and groups. I believe in the power of hope and the concept of resiliency.

There are 6 therapists including myself in the practice. We are all different in our approaches and areas of expertise. Our fees are flexible, as are our hours. We are offering in-person sessions. All of us have worked with students since the start of our careers. In fact women roughly ages 18-25 is our favorite population to work with. We believe the fit between client and therapist is the most important aspect of therapy. You feeling listened to, not judged and that we are focused on helping you is our goal.
Trauma and the destabilizing events of our lives can impact our ability to grow no matter when or how they happen. We can find ourselves in harmful or unmanageable cycles that persist. By creating a safe space to creatively experiment in therapy you can provide yourself with the means and intention to grow. As a Clinician I have worked with clients experiencing addiction, the impact of trauma, and family dysfunction. Perhaps these challenges have led to unhealthy behaviors that don't fit who you are and what you need anymore. Or that you have reached many of your goals but realize the cost has been an internal battle that persists. I am passionate about partnering with my clients to create that safe space and have been inspired by witnessing what happens when it is created. Using a trauma informed lens I offer concrete tools for growth for those experiencing acute symptoms and mindfully move folks into deeper and more intimate somatic and creative interventions when ready.
I work collaboratively with students who face a variety of challenges, including life transitions, relationship issues, and navigating queer identities. College and graduate school typically occur at pivotal developmental points for people in terms of figuring out who they are, what they want, and separating/individuating from parental figures. Together, we will work to understand your inner life, what works and what doesn't in terms of your thinking, behavior and ways of relating to others. Often, patterns develop that help us stay safe and secure when we're young, but would benefit from re-examination and modification to live a more fulfilling adult life. I have a sub-specialty working with people with Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), a highly distressing fixation on a perceived appearance defect that can impact daily functioning and quality of life. I help you understand where the appearance fixation originated, including negative self appraisals and rituals/compulsions that accompany BDD. Learning to face feared and avoided situations is a gradual process that takes place over time, freeing you from the hold of BDD and leading to improved functioning and a more satisfying life.
