Clinical specialist: trauma (childhood sexual abuse and cult abuse) and Cluster B personality disorders (including narcissistic abuse). You look high-functioning on the outside—but your relationships, emotions, or sense of self may tell a different story. Sound familiar? You may be stuck in painful relationship patterns, drawn to emotionally unavailable or narcissistic partners, struggling with identity instability, emotional overwhelm, chronic emptiness, or the lasting effects of trauma. Integrating EMDR, somatic therapy, parts work, and depth psychology approaches, I help patients move beyond insight alone to create meaningful, lasting change. This work is especially well-suited for individuals who are ready to understand themselves more deeply, heal long-standing patterns, and move beyond survival mode—not just manage symptoms.

Young adulthood is a time of transitions, growth and self discovery. While many new challenges can be exciting, this time of exploration can also become overwhelming. There can be a lot of “shoulds”, comparisons and uncertainty. My office is a safe space to process through all of these thoughts and feelings without feeling judged or criticized. Together we work to figure out a path to help you build the necessary skills and insights to launch into the adult life you are seeking. I love working with young adults and college students to help them embrace this season of their life. As a Registered Yoga Teacher I value the connection between the mind and body and what stress does to our overall well being. With that being said- if yoga/meditation/mindfulness is not your thing it does not need to be involved in your treatment. I always work to creatively match the evidenced based treatment modalities I am trained in to fit a client’s unique goals and strengths. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me at 585-432-0717 or through email at maryvanvoorhislcsw@gmail.com to learn more about my practice or to set up a brief initial call to see if my practice might be a good fit for you.

I am a licensed clinical psychologist and a licensed school psychologist. I hold a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Long Island University in Brooklyn, NY. Urban and rural, inpatient and outpatient work settings have taught me about the many challenges an individual may face including experiences of oppression and injustice, as well as a deep appreciation for the richness of the human experience. My style is described as warm, analytical and collaborative, balancing deep emotional work with elements of humor and lightness when appropriate. I aim to help clients address the root of complex challenges, in a safe and supported way. I most enjoy working with anxious kids and families, neurodivergent humans, queer clients, and folks working with depression, trauma, attachment, and identity including DID. I use insight-oriented, mindfulness-based, and systemic approaches including family therapy, Internal Family Systems therapy, and emotion-focused work. I seek to help clients understand patterns that may not be serving them, and to hold a safe and empowering space in which positive shifts can occur. I am a student and teacher of yoga and meditation and I often weave these practices into my work with clients. I currently offer virtual therapy to clients in Oregon, New York, Colorado and Vermont.
Since my first counseling experience at the University at Buffalo's Counseling Center, I have found working with college students especially rewarding. I have dedicated my career to understanding and treating emotional health. I have always been impressed with my clients’ abilities to address and overcome life’s challenges, often using skills they didn’t even know they had. It is so gratifying to see people become the best versions of themselves. A specific area of interest is helping those to improve their interpersonal relationships, whether they be with family, coworkers, or others. I want our sessions to be a supportive and safe place where you can be your genuine self without fear of judgement as you process, learn, and work through life’s challenges. I provide evidenced-based individual therapy services grounded in cognitive behavioral, person-centered, and narrative therapy approaches, as well as motivational interviewing.
In very brief, as a former staff member and previous Director of a college counseling center, I have 20 years of experience and am passionate and committed to working with Undergraduate and Graduate students. Im told I am easy to talk to, give helpful feedback and offer insight and perspective as well as new coping skills. Exploring questions and concerns, helping you describe and better understanding your problems and their origins is part of my approach. I also know students need immediate go to strategies that can often make a difference in how a semester goes. I work with any and all students but have some specialty experience in clients who are creative individuals such as artists and musicians, graduate students and health care majors. I appreciate you checking out my website (see below) or my Psychology Today profile for more information on my practice. Thank you. Hope to meet you soon.

You may find yourself feeling soft spoken, timid, and meek- but secretly waiting to speak- you feel like you are tirelessly trying to keep pace in a world that does not align with your rhythm. If feelings of anxiety are consuming or camouflaging themselves as reoccurring & normal, I am an expert in supporting you in breaking out of your shell, and dismantling old narratives about anxiety, and ADHD. I support clients in exploring their pasts to inform their future, and take control of their narrative. I believe building a healthy connection with yourself is the springboard to living a more fulfilling life and can enhance your ability to form deeper relationships, and show up for yourselves and others in a more grounded way. I do not practice with a one-size fits all approach, and empower clients to take the lead in their experience. I service NY & CT residents. Having spent part of my life in Europe and Africa, my background helps me work with a diverse range of clients - from college students and veterans to corporate employees and expats. I am a clinical psychologist and cultural psychologist (Rutgers, PsyD; Harvard, BA) with 19 years of experience providing psychotherapy to adults. My specialties include depression, trauma, and anxiety as well as stress, life transitions, cultural adjustment, and relationship issues. I am a caring, interactive therapist and use an integrative approach (ACT, CBT, psychodynamic, and mindfulness techniques) to provide you with a safe space to heal and practice new tools as you reset your life compass. I see therapy as a gift to yourself: making time to build knowledge, awareness, and compassion, try new behaviors, and improve your quality of life. Change is possible at any age if there is courage, flexibility, willingness, and action. I also believe that a variety of things can help us heal and enrich our lives (e.g. music, sports, nature, friendships). I look forward to starting this chapter of compassion, healing, and growth with you and invite you to schedule a free consultation today.
