My clients typically seek out my help when they are struggling with one or more of the following symptoms: depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, social anxiety, relationship issues, life/goal uncertainties, unwanted compulsions and/or desires, negative and pessimistic thinking, procrastination, internet overuse, among others. My clients are often trauma survivors or adult children of parents who were emotionally and/or verbally abusive to them. My clients are often easily triggered by relationships, authority, responsibility, deadlines, confrontation, interpersonal conflict, decisions, major life transitions such as getting married, having a baby, breaking off a relationship, or starting and/or changing careers. My clients are typically helped by me in therapy through proven techniques that enable them to gain insight into themselves, to develop clarity into some of the reasons why they are feeling these ways, to learn more effective coping skills and strategies, and to experience authentic emotional healing and co-regulation through the warm, supportive, compassionate, validating, and empathetic intervention of a trusted "other." My clients experience healing and growth in treatment with me because of the trusting environment which is developed. They experience being truly seen and known which promotes more positive and optimistic feelings, and they are given the opportunity to see things more realistically, and can finally feel more at ease with themselves and with the world around them.

I believe that we all benefit from having someone in our corner to listen, motivate, challenge without judgment, and support through life’s unpredictable changes and challenges. Whether you’re feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or not embodying the life you want for yourself, know that whatever you’re going through, change IS possible, and you don’t have to figure it all out on your own. I value practicing what I preach and offer support in the ways that have been most helpful in my own life. Having a holistic therapeutic approach, we will consider different aspects of your life in the quest for health & wellness. This includes your emotional responses to challenges, personal relationships, creative or spiritual outlets, and daily habits and rituals. Rather than just suggest that you incorporate new practices into your life, I believe it's most effective to integrate tools into therapy. Together, we will learn and practice coping skills like breathing techniques, meditation, and changing negative thinking patterns, in order to support your confidence and familiarity in utilizing these tools on your own.

When people ask me what therapy is, I like to explain it is like running to a “Taima” - the Venezuelan word for the "home base" in the game of tag: that safe zone where no one can tag you out, where you catch your breath and recoup. It’s also where you could go to find perspective - to collect and steady yourself before jumping back in the game. My practice, Taima Psychotherapy, is a space you can go to when you need to slow down, explore how you feel, find support, recover, and strategize. I specialize in the treatment of issues related to chronic stress and trauma, and have a special interest on issues related to immigration. I also have experience working with mood and anxiety disorders; and supporting clients through life transitions, grief, relationship difficulties and identity development. I approach treatment in an integrative way, taking into account a client’s specific needs, background and culture. With my clients, I co-plan science-backed strategies to work towards measurable improvements in wellbeing. You may visit my website www.taimapsych.com for more information. Schedule a consultation if Taima feels like the right home base for you.
