Everyone reaches a point in life when they need to make a change. Sometimes we feel stuck and need perspective in finding our own strengths and some new resources. I am in this work because I believe in change and that in pain, there is room for growth and reconnection with what feels most important. Finding a way to work through a traumatic experience, a stressful life transition or confronting long-time challenges can be an overwhelming task. I can join you in the effort. In meeting primarily with individuals, I approach this work with honesty, humility and warmth with the broader goal of providing empirically sound, non-judgmental therapeutic support.

A lot of people say they knew at a young age they would be a therapist, but that wasn’t me. I grew up in a military family and thought I would continue that tradition and be a stay-at-home mom. Instead, I found myself in a journalism career and a marriage I didn’t like. Starting over after 30, I chose to return to school and pursue a degree in social work. Since then, I’ve worked with the military, in inpatient facilities, and in outpatient care. I love working with women who find themselves “outside the box” when it comes to societal expectations (child-free/childless, unmarried, or just a-plain-ol’ rebel). I love to focus on resiliency, self-improvement/self-esteem, personal growth, and even a bit of spirituality (if that's your thing). I'm a very laid-back, nontraditional therapist. I believe you are the expert in your own life and, sometimes, we just need some guidance or permission to do the things we know we need to do. I don't assign homework cause, frankly, I wouldn't do it if I were in your shoes, but I will suggest some tasks or actions that may be something to focus on between sessions. I also expect clients to show up with a discussion topic or something to start us off with; again, the time is yours to use as you feel best. I have very eclectic interests. Two things that are very important to me are spirituality and non-traditional relationships. I feel both have their own challenges and prejudices to overcome. I'm always looking for ways to include and incorporate my client's spiritual beliefs (if they choose to share) into sessions and help them build a strong foundation. Nontraditional relationships (including kink dynamics) can be a challenge to bring to therapy as there's often a perceived level of judgment—not here! I celebrate however your relationship looks and work to help you create the most nurturing and healthy relationship however that looks. One of my core values is curiosity, so I love it when I get to learn a little something from my clients. Having grown up in a military family that moved every three years like clockwork, learning about people and cultures has been a huge part of my life. I encourage my clients to practice showing and embodying their authenticity with me so they may go out into the world more confidently. I believe we all have something beautiful to share and learn from each other and I encourage those I work with to explore that on a deeper level.

Clinical Social Work/Therapist
Brooklyn, NY

Hello! My name is Jasmine Cepeda, LCSW. I am a psychotherapist licensed in New York, New Jersey, & Colorado, based in Brooklyn, NYC. I believe all human beings want to be seen, understood, and accepted. As a therapist, I offer a warm, safe, and patient space for such an experience. We all need someone to empower, validate, and actively listen to us in an empathic way, which is what I strive to do. With over a decade of clinical experience, my therapeutic approach is deeply rooted in helping individuals foster self-reflection and emotional expression. I guide clients through life transitions and help them process a diverse range of emotions, thoughts, traumas, and complex relationships that may cause distress. For instance, I assist clients in processing feelings such as worry, shame, guilt, fear, and sadness, while also facilitating acceptance, trust, hope, forgiveness, accountability, and a sense of enoughness. My practice is also trauma-informed, ensuring that the impacts of past traumas are validated and that safety and trust are established during the healing process. With an eclectic therapeutic approach, I tailor my services to each person's unique needs, employing three main modalities: Emotion Focused/ Psychodynamic Therapy, Compassion-Focused Therapy, & Mindfulness-based/Somatic-based Therapy. Please visit the Frequently Asked Questions section for additional details about these modalities. My approach is centered around helping clients develop self-esteem, authenticity, and emotional regulation skills through building a compassionate presence and mindful awareness. We focus on the present, while integrating the past and being courageously hopeful for the future, even if uncertain. Utilizing the virtual therapy platform Doxy, I provide accessible and convenient care without compromising quality. I am also the author of the books and guided journals: 12 Ways to Cope With Your Latina Mom & Her Difficulties and 12 Ways to Cope With Your Latino Dad & His Difficulties, available on amazon or through direct purchase. Outside of therapy, my interest includes yoga, meditation, and cooking! Lastly, as a native New Yorker and first-generation Latina, with a background in social work, I approach therapy through an anti-oppressive lens. I invite you to reach out and make an appointment. If you have any questions or need further clarification, please visit the Frequently Asked Questions section for additional insights and support.

As a social worker, I believe in the importance of human relationships and in the dignity and worth of the person. I therefore approach every client as an individual and focus on establishing a strong therapeutic alliance. I believe in each person’s ability to grow and change. I believe that we are inherently well intentioned and are simply learning who we are and how we want to show up in this world. I offer an interpersonal style of Cognitive Therapy, combining the belief that it’s the relationship that heals, with an active, educational, and skill based approach. I hope to inspire a fascination with our minds, ultimately supporting clients in developing a strong and healthy sense of self, where you are no longer servants to your “thinking mind” or “conditioned self”, but rather live from the truth of who you are. I believe that the work lies not in getting rid of the unpleasant or uncomfortable thoughts, feelings, and emotions, rather in changing our relationship with them when they arise, based on a more integrated and clear understanding of ourselves. While I was originally trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, most of my clinical experience has been through interpersonal styles of therapy. I believe that the relationship established in a counseling setting is the main priority and factor in the work and growth that is achieved. I therefore aim to foster a relationship with my clients that cultivates authenticity. Through the relationship, grounded in empathy and compassion, I establish a safe and comfortable environment allowing for honest, genuine feedback, ultimately leading to learning and personal growth. I am supportive and directive, while working collaboratively with the client to target issues, minimize symptoms, increase overall wellness, and improve self understanding. Trained in a variety of approaches, I often incorporate many of them in to my treatment based on the individual. My training and experience includes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Trauma Focused CBT (TF-CBT), Depression Care Management, Motivational Interviewing (MI), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Mindfulness. These approaches are well suited for the treatment of depression, anxiety, addictions, trauma, stress, low self-esteem, relationship challenges, and phase of life problems, aiming to teach people to allow for what is happening in the moment without the pressure of trying to change it or fix it, which more often creates increased suffering. They teach us that we do not have to act on every thought and feeling that arises, but we can learn to engage in behaviors that are in line with our values. My approach will often include experiential activities, behavioral experiments, skill building, psycho-education and between session practice. I believe that much of the work done in counseling actually happens between sessions and will therefore check in with you from week to week regarding use of skills, observations of self, and insights gained.

My goal as a therapist is to create a supportive environment for folks to explore their gender and sexuality. Perhaps you identify as queer, bi, lesbian, gay, pan, ace, trans, nonbinary, agender, poly, kinky, something else, all of the above, or nothing at all. You deserve to have a space where you can learn more about your identity without judgment or pressure. As a queer person who has sought out therapy myself, I know how challenging it can be to find an affirming therapist. Even if your identity isn’t central to your therapy goals, I will always aim to honor and validate every part of who you are in our work. My therapeutic style is collaborative and anti-oppressive. My approach is integrative, using tools from a variety of therapeutic modalities—relational, CBT, narrative, sex therapy—that are best suited to each unique client. In addition to specializing in identity, I support clients experiencing depression, anxiety, OCD, trauma, and relationship issues. My aim is to co-create a space with you that facilitates growth, emotional awareness, and authentic self-expression. Please reach out if you have any questions about my work or about therapy more generally. I'm glad that you're seeking out the care you need right now, and I hope that we have the opportunity to connect more soon.
