Therapists for college students near Houston, TX
I am a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP). I obtained both my Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Nursing from The University of Texas at Tyler. I have over 11 years of experience in nursing working in various fields and with a variety of patient populations. I have experience working with patients needing mental health services both inpatient and outpatient. I am dedicated to improving the lives of individuals with mental health concerns by increasing access to those needing mental health treatment while providing support, compassion, and understanding. I am here for the patient and want to ensure that all his or her needs are met. I have a passion for working in mental health services and genuinely care about each individual. I listen to his or her concerns and history to develop a diagnosis and formulate a treatment plan with the patient. The patients preferences and needs will lead the treatment approach initially and going forward. I include the patient in all aspects of care. Listening to his or her concerns, symptoms, and history is an important starting point in developing a diagnosis. The diagnosis is thoroughly discussed with the patient and I will answer any questions that present. Following the diagnosis, a plan of care is developed with the patients input. Patient preferences for therapy, medication, or both, are included in the treatment plan, and any referrals necessary will be made. Medication, if necessary and agreed upon, will be called in to the patients preferred pharmacy and any remaining questions or concerns will be addressed. A follow-up visit to assess ongoing effectiveness of the treatment plan will be made. At consecutive appointments, any necessary changes to the treatment plan will be made. However, I am available for concerns, questions, or needs that may arise prior to follow-up visits when needed.
I am one of the leading experts in pre-surgical psychological evaluations. I have authored a book titled "Psychological Assessment of Surgical Candidates: Evidence-Based Procedures and Practices" and actively engage in society work associated with the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery to advance training and science related to bariatric surgery. My clinical training experiences have largely centered around assessing the intersections of medical/health, psychological, and social aspects of individuals to facilitate successful outcomes in medical settings. With training from some of the leading experts in psychological assessment, I am also proficient in conducting disability/worker's compensation evaluations, pre-employment screening, and general psychodiagnostic evaluations in addition to pre-surgical assessments. I am licensed in the state of Texas (#38086) and hold a PsyPact license to practice in other states. My research focuses on understanding how psychological factors contribute to medical outcomes. I have over 60 peer-reviewed publications, primarily focused on pre-surgical psychological evaluations and their predictive value for various outcomes. I use my research findings to assist patients in managing risk factors before and after surgery to optimize their outcomes. Additionally, I have a keen interest in psychological assessment, particularly in the use and study of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) in both research and practice. I have been recognized by several national organizations with early-career research awards for my contributions to pre-surgical psychological evaluations. Currently, I am the Principal Investigator on novel psychological interventions for Type 2 Diabetes. I also serve as an Associate Editor for two esteemed journals in the field – Psychological Assessment and Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases.

My name is Jessica Carnesi Peterson and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Houston, Texas. I have a private practice in the Memorial-area of Houston and love working with clients, especially those who are college-aged and young adults. Prior to my private practice experience for the past 20 years, I worked at Menninger Clinic on the young adult unit. Presently, I work with clients who may be experiencing symptoms of anxiety, depression, other mood-related disorders, transition into college, and any phase of life challenges.
Howdy! My name is A.B. and I’m a queer, nonbinary therapist born and raised right here in Texas. Don’t let the folksy exterior fool you: growing up in a small town taught me to treat strangers like family, to uplift and respect the folks around me, and, as my granddad always said, “If you can help ’em, then help ’em.” I’ve brought those values into my therapy work and left the bigotry and systemic oppression behind like the hogwash it is. I practice from a place of cultural humility, guided by the stories, strengths, and values my clients bring to the table. You’re the expert on your life, I’m just here to walk alongside you, bringing the tools I’ve got in my toolbelt to help you navigate whatever’s weighing you down. There’s nothing too big we can’t face together, and I trust that with you in the lead, we can work toward the outcomes you’re hoping for in therapy. I specialize in supporting clients through trauma, grief, mood disorders, LGBTQ+ issues, neurodivergence, identity exploration, crisis recovery, and relationship challenges. I also love working with children and their families around emotional regulation, school and family stress, and communication. I’ve got a soft spot for neurodivergent kids (and adults!) and bring a lot of energy and creativity into that work. In session, I pull from a variety of therapeutic approaches, including CBT, DBT, ACT, solution-focused, narrative, and collaborative therapies, plus a lot more. So don’t be surprised if I throw in a little art-making, somatic work, or IFS (parts work) now and then. I’m committed to being a lifelong learner, and if something isn’t clicking, I’ll work with you to find what does. I earned my Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Sam Houston State University in 2023, and before that, I got my B.A. in Theatre Education. So I’m definitely open to getting creative in sessions, though just plain talkin’ is great, too. Outside of therapy, I love baking, storytelling in all its forms (theatre, concerts, poetry slams, and tabletop RPGs), and learning about folks whose lives are different from mine. I also enjoy spending time with my partner and our beloved pets Pip, Charlie, and Winston. If you think I might be the right counselor for you, I’d be honored to meet you. Feel free to email me at ab@vadacounseling.com or schedule a free consultation online.

*My hours vary, please reach out to ask about my current availability! Let’s be real, anxiety is a b!tch. I can help, let’s chat! My clients struggle like you do. They live with anxiety- the heart racing, chest tightening, skin crawling, keeps you up all night kind. They often grew up in emotionally and physically unsafe environments, been in inconsistent and unstable relationships. Being on guard, people pleasing, and quieting their voice was a means to survive with the least amount of damage. When my clients first come in, they feel ANXIOUS. They don’t know where to start. They minimize their experiences and often say “I’m fine” when really they are living in their own personal hell and trauma is the prison keeper. And lets be clear- Trauma, is also a b!tch. Despite knowing the challenges they have been through, my clients tell themselves “I should be over this. It’s not that bad.” They often avoid confronting people in their life even if they are unhappy with the relationship or the way life is going. Remaining quiet to reestablish a sense of internal safety - also known as the trauma response of fawning - is something my clients know very well. Their fear of being seen and the possible harm that could come from that - being emotionally rejected, criticized, physically hurt - keeps my clients stuck in a pattern of shrinking into themselves, doing what they are told they “should” do, and forcing themselves to believe the story of “If I just forget about it, it will go away. I’ll be fine.” Before my clients came to see me, they carried the weight of their experiences on their chest, rarely feeling like they could catch their breath, be present in their life, or feel happy. They felt distant from friends and family, drained by the day after day hold worry and restlessness had on them, and too exhausted to even send a quick text. Like my clients, you deserve to live anxiety free - establishing your own rules on life, setting boundaries, and confident in the way you show up in the world. Feeling relief without depending on anyone else’s approval is not out of reach. If you want to ditch anxiety, break out of people pleasing, say no, assert your personal needs and expectations - I’d love to help you get there.

Victoria Duru is a board-certified nurse practitioner in psychiatry and family medicine who started her career as a young staff nurse over 15 years ago and worked her way up. She received her Master’s of Science in Nursing from Walden University in Minnesota, Minneapolis. After graduating she worked at a Correctional facility in Houston, TX. Her experience demonstrated the gap between medical and psychiatric care, and how the mind/body connection is often overlooked. The gap in care motivated Victoria to pursue a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner certificate at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley so that she can develop a practice that integrates medicine and mental health for the most effective treatment.
