We all experience times of change, transition, and stress that can affect mood and anxiety. I offer an active, collaborative working relationship grounded in respect, transparency, and a deep desire to help clients heal and grow. Clients have remarked that I am particularly skilled in helping them navigate and grow through life transitions and take responsibility for and develop ways of coping and responding to life stresses that honor their multiple and intersecting identities and values, while also encouraging them to stretch, consider, and apply new perspectives and skills. I have over 25 years of experience as a therapist in a university counseling center and have extensive experience with undergraduate and graduate students. I am committed to helping people create and sustain a satisfying and purposeful life. With the intention of helping them move toward a greater sense of overall well-being, I enjoy working with clients around life transitions, career exploration, identity exploration, managing societally induced stress particularly related to marginalized identities, and those experiencing concerns related to career and work. I have extensive training and experience with mindfulness and integrate that into my therapeutic work. Beyond therapy, I provide Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction courses and mindfulness-based classes for groups. Please contact me to schedule a free, 15-minute phone conversation so we can talk more about what he's looking for, I can explain more about my practice, and we can see if it mutually feels like a good fit to take the next step and schedule an initial meeting.

You are important and your thoughts and feelings matter! Therapy is your time to take care of yourself. It is the opportunity to explore, problem solve and sort out your thoughts and feelings in a safe and supportive way. With over 25 years of clinical experience, I have successfully worked with clients of all ages and struggles. I partner with you to help you identify and understand your patterns of thoughts, feelings and behaviors that are contributing to your emotions and struggles such as depression, anxiety, frustration, and feeling overwhelmed and/or stuck. We then explore, analyze, and select solutions that work best for you. My therapy approach is based primarily in cognitive behavioral therapy with a solution focused perspective. I partner with you to help you gain an understanding of the reasons why you are struggling and develop an action plan to help you overcome and achieve your goals and potential. Therapy is an active and engaging process. I provide a supportive and accepting environment for you to express yourself fully. An environment that allows you to feel safe to explore, learn, and develop solutions and skills needed so you can overcome your struggles and reach your goals. Hi and welcome! My name is Rhonda Matlack and I have been a Licensed Counselor since 1998. Counseling historically has been something that society has been ashamed of hence many people have suffered needlessly due to lack of support. I'm here to tell you that seeking support and moving toward emotional wellness is deserving of every individual from any walk of life. It is my philosophy that those who reach out for heIp, those that take the risk to be better, those that face their fears will have a sustainable life pattern of coping that leads to wellness. We are all made unique, each one of us is made to serve and benefit in this life with a purpose. Last, I believe healthcare should be made affordable to all, therefore I have a very low sliding scale to offer folks. Get in touch to learn more.

The desire to know and to be known is a normal human experience. I value the trauma-informed safety and client-centered connection we collaboratively create through a systematic lens. I am particularly sensitive to diversity in culture and self-identity, including with respect to race, gender and sexuality. I believe the importance of affirming the unique individual experience with cultural humility. Through compassion, sensitivity, and empowerment, we will work together respectfully to acknowledge vulnerability, unearth patterns, attend complexity, and gain ownership change to achieve the most authentic and expansive self. I have experience working with trauma, depression, anxiety, substance use, life transition challenges, self-esteem, relationship issues including intimate partner violence, and immigration matter. I approach this work holistically with warmth, empathy, and ever developing curiosity. It takes courage to seek a more fulfilling and happier life and to take the first step towards change. It takes intentions to create the time and space to understand and explore ways to navigate the situation we are in. If you would like to explore what that looks like, I am here to support and empower you.

*Due to the current Covid-19 crises, my practice is set up to see patients thru video conference calling which is HIPPA compliant for privacy. I believe that individual therapy is the bedrock of mental health change especially for personal issues such as depression, anxiety, relationship self esteem and emotional problems of living. Counseling with your therapist needs to be collaborative where clients sort out thoughts and feelings in order to get a better understanding of who they are. Counseling is completely different from person to person. One client may want more advice or suggestions. Another might want mostly to vent and to be heard. Still others may need to be challenged or confronted. In general, though, most therapists believe that counseling helps us understand thoughts and feelings about ourselves that we have not previously fully recognized. Sigmund Freud referred to this process as making that which is unconscious conscious. I trust that clients know deep down what should be talked about in therapy and that they mostly need help knowing how to access these thoughts and feelings in order to realize what it is they want and need from others and their lives. My approach is eclectic or integrative, but I use many behavioral and cognitive-behavioral approaches in my work. I am particularly interested in evidenced-based and best practices approaches to treatment and so I continually challenge myself to learn newly refined techniques and approaches and provide each patient with the best of my learning over 30 years of practice in multiple settings. I am humanistic and client centered as well and and have found that it often helps patients to know that their therapist is a regular, genuine and authentic individual who is dedicated to my profession and feels that much can be learned from the relationship of therapy. Many clients come to a therapist’s office because they are struggling in their relationships. Paying attention to how your relationship develops in the office can help you understand how really important social interactions in your life outside of the therapeutic relationship actually work.

I have a Master’s Degree in Clinical/Counseling Psychology and hold credentials as both a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and National Certified Counselor (NCC). I have been in the field a little over 10 years and have worked with clients with a wide range of concerns; including depression, anxiety, identity formation, crisis management, addiction, and life transitions. My counseling style is very person-first and engaging. I believe in incorporating different therapeutic techniques in order to meet you exactly where you are during each interaction. My approach combines cognitive-behavioral, dialectical-behavioral, person-centered, and solution-focused techniques. My goal is to have you feel comfortable and help guide you to develop healthy skills that encourage empowerment and self-discovery. Outside of my career, I am an animal lover that enjoys traveling. I enjoy being physically active and believe the best gifts are those you can experience! I am a fan of all Italian food and find comfort relaxing while watching a good movie or reading a thrilling book. I strongly advocate the concept of self-care and overall life balance. I understand how vulnerable and overwhelming it can feel to seek counseling and I appreciate the courage my clients display by doing so. I hope to support and provide encouragement as we begin this process together. I believe that every individual has the ability to overcome struggles and learn how to highlight their strengths that they may not even be aware they have! I look forward to working with you! "You're Braver than you believe. Stronger than you seem. and Smarter than you think." - A.A. Milne
