Many of the students I work with are navigating a lot internally—stress, anxiety, self-doubt, or feeling unsure about their path. You might find yourself overthinking, putting pressure on yourself to have everything figured out, or struggling in relationships while trying to balance it all. You may look like you’re doing fine on the outside, but feel overwhelmed or stuck underneath. You don’t have to have everything figured out. If you’re open to growing, gaining clarity, and building a stronger relationship with yourself, we’d likely work well together.
There is so much uncertainty that it’s difficult to know how to focus on studying. Are you just surviving, feeling that each day is a struggle? It might feel like drowning. Nobody understands. It’s just to much, but how can you give up? Being is college is a new developmental fase, and I am aware of the difficulty and loneliness that can happen at times. It’s hard. I am here to help understand yourself and the make sense of,the world around you and develop ways of relating that will expand your life in unexpected ways. Call me if you want to try! I am meeting by video call and in person. Ofrezco terapia en español. Therapy is not only to solve problems, it is also to explore how to live more fully.

I am full of energy, observant, assertive, self-discipline, and compassionate. I am Afro-Latina and a first-generation immigrant, bilingual (Spanish). During my intense training in working with the minority community, I have grown to become a more authentic human being. This has led me to continue to foster cultural humility when engaging with others, as we become a more diverse country enriched by an influx of multiculturalism. In sessions, you can expect a burst of energy. We will translate that energy into a collaborative “work in progress.” We will go at the pace that is most convenient for you. I will join you and go inside those scary places, while you overcome the fear of the unknown. I will help you challenge your own belief systems and construct a new reality that works for you. You will discover deeper and more vulnerable emotions and learn to recognize the things that keep you stuck. You will discover well-rounded results that continuously allow you to develop a sense of self. I’m happy to guide you through all of life’s challenges with the attention and care you deserve.

Struggling with your relationship with sex, sexuality, and/or gender identity? I support you in working towards self acceptance and emotional regulation. Life burning down around you? Cool, grab a seat. Cry, laugh, drop a few F-bombs. You’re safe here. Welcome to therapy! I’m a therapist, a professor, and a real human who’s lived through real things. I don’t do this work from a distance. I’ve moved through anxiety and depression. I’ve grieved the loss of people I love. I’ve gone through divorce. I’m raising a child with special needs… and all of that shapes how I show up for you. In my therapy space, we slow down. We breathe. We talk honestly. We laugh sometimes. We grieve sometimes. And we make room for the parts of you that you’ve had to hide to survive. Therapy should reflect your inner world and the world you live in, so I bring a progressive, social justice-rooted perspective to my work. I see you as a whole person through a bio-psycho-social-cultural-spiritual lens. I am fat-positive, sex-positive, kink-friendly, and identity-affirming. I am client-centered and strengths-based. Going to therapy can be scary. You’re pouring your life out to someone you don’t know. You’re sharing things you’ve never said out loud. That takes vulnerability. Folks trust me to hold some of the most complicated parts of their lives. It’s an honor, and I want to be a good vessel for that, someone who holds your story with care and compassion, and without judgment. I believe everyone should have access to affordable health and mental health care, so don't let the price deter you. Contact me to discuss our sliding scale. I also offer a no-pressure, first session to make sure it is a good fit!

Welcome to Unspoken Roots Psychotherapy! My name is Edward Chan, and I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and founder of Unspoken Roots Psychotherapy. I specialize in supporting Asian American college students and young adults as they navigate the unique challenges that can come from balancing personal goals, family expectations, cultural values, and the pressures of academic and professional success. Many Asian American students grow up carrying messages about achievement, responsibility, sacrifice, and making their families proud. While these values can be sources of strength, they can also contribute to anxiety, perfectionism, self-criticism, burnout, difficulty setting boundaries, and a persistent feeling of never being "good enough." You may find yourself succeeding on paper while privately struggling with stress, loneliness, imposter syndrome, or uncertainty about who you are beyond what you accomplish. Therapy offers a space to slow down and explore these experiences without judgment. Together, we can better understand the influences that have shaped you, process the challenges you're facing, and develop practical tools to manage anxiety, build self-confidence, strengthen relationships, and create a life that feels aligned with your own values—not just the expectations placed upon you. My approach integrates evidence-based therapies including CBT, ACT, DBT, and insight-oriented therapy while remaining sensitive to the cultural, familial, and identity-related experiences that many Asian American students navigate. Whether you're struggling with academic pressure, family dynamics, relationships, career decisions, or your sense of belonging, you don't have to carry it alone. At Unspoken Roots Psychotherapy, I strive to create a space where the experiences that often go unspoken can be explored openly, helping you cultivate greater self-understanding, balance, and fulfillment as you navigate college and beyond.
