Hello and welcome—I’m glad you’re here! If you’ve been feeling anxious, stressed, or uncertain about how to handle life’s challenges, you don’t have to face them on your own. As a Licensed Professional Counselor, I’ll help you untangle what feels overwhelming and guide you toward healthier ways of coping. Together, we’ll work on reducing stress, calming anxious thoughts, and finding greater balance. In our sessions, you’ll have a supportive space where your voice matters and your whole self is truly welcome. I believe meaningful change begins with a strong therapeutic relationship. My priority is to create a safe, supportive space where you feel truly heard and understood. From that foundation, I draw on Person-Centered therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and other evidence-based approaches, adapting each to meet your unique needs. Reaching out for help takes courage, and it’s a step toward the life you want to create. My role is to walk alongside you, offering encouragement, authenticity, and guidance as you navigate your journey of healing. You deserve a safe, affirming space to explore your story—and I’d be honored to support you in building the peace and confidence you’re seeking.
Primal Counsel supports fundamental human needs we know to be true based on science, personal experience and shared wisdom to help you create a deeply meaningful and joyful life. The aim is to thrive, not just survive. Each individual has the supreme insight and ability to transform their life. And, with the right knowledge, tools, and intention true and lasting transformation can be realized. Discover your authentic self and create the space necessary for what is meant to be lived. Acquire, or further develop, the skills necessary to face challenges, at home or in the workplace, with greater ease. I specialize in practices that are born from thousands of years of wisdom and validated by current and leading research in neuroscience, physiology, and ecology. Acceptance and Commitment Theory (ACT), equine-facilitated development, integrative nutrition, and plant and earth-based technology inform and guide my work.
“The only way to deal with an unfree world is to become so absolutely free that your very existence is an act of rebellion.” ― Albert Camus. Choosing to be alive in our society and culture is a brave, daring, and difficult act. I enjoy working with people who want to understand and support themselves in healing from and with shame, disconnection, stagnancy, and trauma with the goal of becoming more alive, more true to themselves, and more genuinely connected to themselves and the world around them. I am a gentle person who enjoys using humor and delicately mixing the light and dark of the world in the healing journey. I am skilled in DBT and ITCT. I am currently pursuing training in Somatic Experiencing Therapy. I have specialized in working with young adults who are experiencing depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, self-harm, BPD, bipolar disorder, and complex trauma. I am passionate about supporting survivors of child abuse/neglect, sexual assault, and intimate partner violence. I am dedicated to anti-racism. I am of the LGBTQ+ community and bilingual in Spanish and English. I accept Highmark insurance and am currently in the process of credentialing with UPMC, Medicaid, Cigna, Aetna, and United. I offer sliding scale sessions. I can offer free introduction phone calls to see if we are a good fit. Reach out with any questions or interests!

Hi, I'm Dr. Annie Moten. Since earning my doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Rutgers University, I have approached therapy as a collaborative journey, walking alongside my clients to help them understand their experiences without judgment. My goal is to support individuals in creating a life that acknowledges both their pain and their potential for growth. I strive to build trust through straightforwardness, kindness, irreverence, and humor, creating a space that is both safe and empowering. Drawing on my extensive DBT training and lived experience, I foster emotional containment and autonomy. I also incorporate creative outlets. Our approach at Better Life Associates is active and collaborative. We believe that a strong working alliance with our patients is critical to help achieve emotional insights in treatment that lead to positive and lasting change. We also help identify patterns of behavior that hold individuals back from leading a better and more fulfilling life. Whether you are seeking in-person treatment in Long Island, NY or teletherapy in NY, NJ, or PA, I'd be delighted to hear from you. I have limited therapy session times currently available in my schedule, so let's set up an initial preliminary call soon to discuss how we can work together.
Are you feeling overwhelmed, hopeless and struggling to connect with others? Is your inner critic getting the best of you? Is the way you learned to cope with life not working anymore? Considering therapy, but unsure of what to expect? Have you had trouble finding the right fit with past therapists? I tailor my therapeutic approach to your individual needs. I have a relaxed, accepting, and compassionate style. I enjoy humor and am comfortable with anger. I often work with those encouraged to attend by a parent, spouse, or partner, and those who are doubtful therapy can help. Give me a call, leave me a voicemail, or email for a free phone consultation and to schedule an appointment. I look forward to hearing from you, and will do my best to provide additional referral information if I am not the right fit for your needs. I am currently offering simple, virtual secure video telehealth sessions and secure phone sessions.
