Do you ever feel overwhelmed by the pressure you put on yourself or by what everyone else seems to expect from you? College can come with a long list of demands. Do well in classes. Make friends. Join clubs. Keep everyone happy. Figure out your future. When all of this adds up, it can start to feel heavy and confusing. I’m Emily, a therapist with extensive experience working with children, teens, and adults in community mental health clinics, schools, non-profits, and group practices. In the role of therapist, my initial priority is creating the safety and familiarity that is crucial to do real work together. I look at the therapeutic process as an opportunity to work with the person coming to me in need of support, and tackle their issues as a team. I bring a nonjudgmental, open-minded approach to my clients and emphasize the importance of clients feeling secure enough to say anything they need to in the space we curate together. My approach has an emphasis on self-compassion and becoming in tune with your emotions and body. In today’s world, it is easier than ever to become disconnected from your body and feelings. My hope is that we can work together to reintegrate your inner wisdom to your conscious level of awareness.
My goal is to bring warmth and acceptance to all my clients and to provide them with concrete skills that they can use to help solve their problems and live more fulfilling lives. I am licensed in New York and Montana. College can be a really fun and exciting chapter in one's life; it can also feel really crazy and overwhelming! I see therapy as a means of promoting balance and happiness, and improving clients' relationships with themselves and those around them.
I have worked with Princeton undergraduate and graduate students for many years and understand well the many and varied challenges which students may face; in fact, my MSW field work and my first job were at Princeton's Counseling Center. Many of my clients share a need to explore familial relationships to understand their behavioral patterns and how to make those patterns healthier. My approach ranges from DBT and mindfulness work for anxiety and depression to the traditional psychodynamic and interpersonal therapy. I am also a psychoanalyst, trained at the New Jersey Institute for Psychoanalysis. Among the various issues I treat are anxiety, depression, trauma, life transitions, grief, behavioral patterns, and academic stress.
You deserve to feel better. Our interdisciplinary approach includes relational and psychodynamic paradigms, alternative treatments and arts based practices. We are multi-culturally oriented therapists using multi-method based approaches to: empower and cultivate resiliency; manage depression and anxiety; understand the impact of trauma, abuse and neglect across the lifespan; better understand the impact of oppression on your intersectional lived experience; examine psychodynamic issues; recognize transpersonal and spirituality influences; and leverage cross-cultural and transnational experiences. Our whole-istic approach works with you to co-create a safer clinical environment and therapeutic relationship that supports emotional, psychological and spiritual growth. Services available in English, Portuguese, Spanish. Telehealth only.
We offer trauma-focused strengths-based therapy to individuals, caregivers, and families. When working with children, families will be engaged in play therapy sessions to encourage bonding, communication, and growth. With adolescents and adults, using CBT techniques, we will focus on replacing negative thinking with positive self-talk and adapting positive coping mechanisms. Through Somatic Experiencing techniques, we can tap into physical and emotional symptoms associated with trauma -- locked into the body -- and guide you into identifying and utilizing the innate healing capacity in your body.
