I am a clinical psychologist specializing in working with young adults and students. I spent 10 years on staff at various university counseling centers around the country and now work in private practice doing individual psychotherapy in Illinois and New York. My approach combines my education, training, and own life experience to work with individuals collaboratively, with a focus on how to meaningfully and healthfully navigate life events. While trained as a generalist to provide treatment for a variety of mental health concerns my clinical specialties include working with depression, anxiety, trauma, relationship/family distress, life transitions, grief/loss, and stress management.
Danielle Herold received her Master's Degree in Social Work from New York University and a Master's Degree in Education from Lesley University. She is a trained psychotherapist who has experience in both inpatient and outpatient psychotherapy settings. She has a client-centered approach and is effective in working with anxiety and depression. She also has a background in trauma and eating disorders and a special interest in working with young adults. She has a commitment to working with a diverse clientele, including the trans community. Ms. Herold has an eclectic approach to therapy, applying strong psychodynamic therapy skills and CBT as appropriate. She also incorporates mindfulness skills to help clients improve the ability to manage emotions. Ms. Herold taught middle school for several years in Boston private schools, and this background brings a rich perspective to her practice.
I'm currently working as a postdoctoral fellow. I earned my doctoral degree in Clinical & School Psychology from Roberts Wesleyan University. I completed my pre-doctoral internship at Nebraska Mental Health Centers in Lincoln, Nebraska. At this site, I received an extensive generalist training in therapeutic practices and psychological assessments, addressing a wide array of psychopathologies and demographics. I provide therapy services from an integrative perspective, drawing primarily from Person-Centered, Attachment, Cognitive-Behavioral (CBT), Dialectical Behavior (DBT), and Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) therapies. This means our work together will prioritize creating a safe, empathetic space where your unique experiences are deeply understood and respected. We'll explore how early relationships and patterns might be influencing your present struggles and how to build more secure connections. Additionally, you'll learn practical skills to identify and shift unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors, manage intense emotions and improve relationships, and cultivate mindfulness, acceptance, and a commitment to living in alignment with your values, even in the face of discomfort. My goal is to tailor our approach to your specific needs, empowering you with both insight and effective strategies for lasting change and a more fulfilling life. My significant experience in community mental health uniquely equips me to address anxiety disorders, mood disorders, personality disorders, behavioral issues, parenting training, severe and persistent mental illness, and trauma across diverse child, adolescent, and adult populations. My background in the school setting further allows me to provide comprehensive wrap-around services for children and families. Last, I have done extensive research on minority stress, the impact it has on mental health in the LGBTQ+ community, and subsequent affirmative evidence-based treatments. My training has also prepared me to provide comprehensive diagnostic and psychoeducational evaluations. This helps clients gain diagnostic clarification and provides a direction for treatment services.
I have over 20 years of experience, including 10 specifically dedicated to supporting college students. I bring deep clinical expertise, strong understanding of emerging adulthood, & proven ability to help students/adults navigate academic, emotional & life transitions with resilience and confidence.
I have been repeatedly impressed and moved by the process and experience that is psychotherapy. With each new person that I meet, I endeavor to foster a relationship through which healing, self-awareness, and personal growth can take place. I aim to help people identify their own emotional truths and live a more fulfilling life. If you are unhappy with the direction your life is going, dissatisfied with the quality of your relationships, or experiencing distressing symptoms that make it difficult to get through your days, please call for an initial consultation. I offer individual psychotherapy, group psychotherapy, and couples counseling, as well as consultation services for mental health professionals. My practice focuses on the treatment of depression and anxiety, grief and loss, adjustment to chronic illness, stress management, and interpersonal difficulties. My approach is integrative and collaborative, based on trust, respect, and compassion. I am a Certified Group Psychotherapist (International Board for Certification of Group Psychotherapists) and lead therapy groups that focus on the improvement of interpersonal functioning and the enhancement of an individual's ability to develop healthy, satisfying and emotionally close relationships.
I’m a licensed psychologist and have worked with college-age young adults for many years. I have a youthful energy and I believe in being a good and supportive listener. I utilize evidence-based cognitive-behavioral and acceptance and commitment therapy interventions to help young adults create and apply effective action plans in their life. I’m not interested in helping young adults merely admire their problems, is this usually results in remaining stuck. Instead, I work collaboratively to identify promising interventions to move our life forward towards desired goals. This, I find, is the only way for a person to build genuine confidence.
I like to think of therapy as a journey of inner exploration and I am along as a guide. I believe that therapy is most effective when it is a combination of intellectual understanding and emotional experience. In that regard, it feels like your feelings are our road signs that we are in the right track to self-growth. I try to not have a specific agenda going into sessions, but rather to go where it is you feel like you need to go at that time. I believe that it is my role to create a safe space for you to express and explore whatever it is that is inside you. Compassion is key, and cultivating self-compassion is one of the most important elements of therapy. I look forward to helping you explore and become more self-aware and self-compassionate!
