Therapists for college students near Northeastern University
Hello, and welcome. My name is Kathleen McGah and I offer a comfortable, confidential space for teens, college-age students and young adults to talk about whatever is on their mind, at one's own pace, and without judgment. When people have a safe place to practice putting thoughts and feelings into words, they find they grow psychologically stronger over time - and more satisfied with various aspects of life. I have worked with many students who, initially, have been hesitant to talk with a professional. (Even if one has had a counseling experience in the past, it can still be difficult to start with a new therapist.) It makes sense if you have some hesitation about taking this step. Only you will know if you are ready. If you have been struggling and think it would be good to meet with a therapist, though, please reach out.
Life is a journey filled with transitions, some anticipated, others unexpected. At ReAlign Wellness Group, we understand that navigating these changes can be challenging. Whether you're transitioning into college, exploring aspects of your identity such as gender, race, or age, managing anxiety or depression, coping with loss, or considering or maintaining sobriety, we're here to support you. Our therapists use evidence-based approaches like CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing and other tools that support real progress. Most importantly, we believe that healing happens in relationship with a therapist who honors your voice, values, and lived experience. We offer a free 15-minute consultation to help you find the right therapist for your needs. Sessions are available weekdays, with daytime and limited evening availability. We provide telehealth sessions and accept several major insurance plans along with offering private pay options. If you're moving through a time of change or ready to make one, we’re here to help.
I am a Mental Health Counselor, practicing in both Massachusetts and New Hampshire, and the founder of Self First Counseling, PLLC. I have had the pleasure to work with a range of individuals across my career. I received my Bachelor of Science degree from Boston University in Behavior and Health and later received my Master of Science degree at Salem State University in Mental Health Counseling Psychology. I specialize in treating anxiety, depression, alcohol use, stress, and relationship/family issues. I am a certified clinician and supervisor in the Adolescent Community Reinforcement Approach (A-CRA), an evidence based approach to working with adolescents and young adults who struggle with substance use. My approach to counseling is client centered. I believe it is important to meet my clients where they are at and collaborate around goals of counseling. I have previous experience working in settings such as residential programs, intensive in-home services, and within medical settings. I find it important to build an alliance with my clients where we can work together and I can support my clients in making strides towards completing their identified goals. I believe strongly in highlighting strengths and keeping a strength-based attitude throughout treatment. I believe that we are all unique and, therefore, one technique does not fit all. I feel strongly that counseling can support us when we are in a difficult place, but also when we are doing well. It’s important to have support from others and be able to continue to make progress so we can always be a better version of ourselves than we were the day before. Set-backs and struggles are all a part of life, change, and success. I am here to provide education, support, validation, encouragement, and new ideas in order to help my clients achieve the success and change they are looking for. Your journey of self starts here.

Does if feel like you worry more than other people, have racing thoughts, or keep thinking about the same issues over and over again? Or maybe your mood has been low and the things you used to enjoy no longer feel enjoyable? These are common symptoms of anxiety and depression that we can work together to address in therapy.
I have been a therapist in the mental health field for almost 20 years. I have experience helping people with grief and loss, addiction, depression, anxiety, trauma and PTSD. I offer a supportive environment where we will collaborate to establish what your goals are in therapy and how to achieve your goals.
It can be extremely hard to navigate through life with all of the stressors we face on a daily basis. I have worked with clients with a wide range of concerns including anxiety, depression, relationship issues, and various challenges in college. It would be my great pleasure to work with you and to help you on your journey of growth and discovery.
Great to meet you! My philosophy is simple: listen first, treat second. I take time to understand your story, explain how diagnoses and medications work, and ensure every decision is made together. You’ll never feel rushed or dismissed. I value transparency, education, and collaboration in every session. My approach to treatment: What you can expect from our first session Our first session is about getting to know you. We’ll review your current concerns, explore your history, and discuss what you hope to gain from treatment. Most importantly, you’ll be met with patience and respect. This is a space for you to feel heard, understood, and supported as we begin working toward meaningful change together. The students I connect with most are curious about themselves and want to understand not just what they feel, but why. Many seem capable on the outside but feel overwhelmed on the inside — struggling with anxiety, perfectionism, friendship or dating struggles, or a harsh inner critic. Some notice the same patterns repeating or feel unsure of who they are and what they want. If you’re ready to look a little deeper, we’ll likely be a good fit. I offer a steady, supportive space to explore the inner stuff you’ve been carrying around. I bring warmth, curiosity, and a sense of humor to our work, helping therapy feel human, relatable, and sometimes even a little fun. I use talk therapy as our foundation, and when it’s a good fit, I may also bring in EMDR, a well-researched approach that helps your brain process difficult experiences — whether from the past or present — so they feel less intense and less triggering. I also draw from practical skills, mindfulness, and self-exploration tools to help you feel more grounded, confident, and in control — ready to move through college with greater clarity, self-trust, and maybe even a few laughs along the way.
My practice has always been focused on serving the BGLTQ+ Community, especially trans & gender diverse people, and polyamorous people. I tend to see a lot of geeky and neurodivergent people. My work as a therapist is informed by early training in both psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral therapy for anxiety disorders and depression, including Dialectical Behavior Therapy. My approach draws from the applications of mindfulness and self-compassion in psychotherapy, as well as feminist approaches such as Relational-Cultural therapy. Ultimately, I believe it is the relationship that heals, as well as learning to be a kind friend to oneself. I believe that good mental health means knowing you have choices and making them consciously (not which choices you make). (Please note if contacting me: it will save time if you include your insurance company and whether HMO or PPO.)
As a Harvard-trained licensed clinical psychologist with over 25 years experience, I often see clients who struggle with managing stress and anxiety, have unsatisfying family and personal relationships, experience health problems or grief and loss, or have trouble focusing in school and work. Change involves both insight and actual changes in one's behavior. My goal is to create a time and place with you where we can work safely to explore the origins of the problems and then make improvements. My approach is warm, supportive, and actively focused on bringing about lasting change. I provide therapy via telehealth. <script src="https://thrivingcampus.com/verified.js?pid=46833"></script>
