Melissa Light holds a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from Emory University. She received her Master's Degrees in Elementary Education from Southern Connecticut State University and in Mental Health Counseling from Georgia State University. Melissa completed her practicum and internship at Ray of Hope, providing play therapy for children and individual and couples counseling for adults. She has worked with individuals to address mood and anxiety disorders, grief, and relationship issues. In addition to private practice, she has provided therapy in a university counseling center and at an outpatient recovery center for opioid addiction. As a counselor at the recovery center, she led a Women’s Self-Care group which addressed issues of physical and emotional well-being, co-dependency, healthy boundaries, and parenthood. In doing so, clients can address barriers and learn how to live at their full potential. She works from an eclectic approach, using Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) to explore thought and behavior patterns and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to help clients better manage their emotions and relationships. Life can be hard. I get it. Especially when trying to balance the already difficult challenges of daily life and trying to be successful in higher education at the same time. Anxiety, family conflict, relationship problems, imposter syndrome, and other common problems are understandable concerns with everything today’s college student have to deal with. Adjustment to college by itself can be challenging, be it undergrad or even grad school. I believe I can help… I have a very down-to-earth, non-judgmental style and like to think that I am easy to talk to. I have over 20 years of experience in Mental Health and Higher Education. Therapeutically, I use an integrative approach that draws heavily on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Systems Theory, and is influenced by social justice frameworks. Professionally my interests include racially marginalized students, developmental concerns, family of origin concerns, relationship concerns, stress/anxiety induced academic performance issues, men’s issues, and imposter syndrome/sense of belonging. Outside of work, I consider myself a “Blerd”. I’m a serious movie/cinema buff. I’m also a fan of all things Comics and Sci-Fi/fantasy. I enjoy community service and cultural events. (Note: I can not accept current Emory University Students)
In our sessions, I'm learning about you and working as a guide to help you to make connections between your unique experiences and make sense of what you're experiencing. I use a Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) modality, in which we focus on patterns of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors and how they impact each other. I also incorporate Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills to help clients feel more in control of their emotions and their lives in general. Each session is tailored to the individual, as every person has different needs. We will work together to figure out what is most important to you and the best way for you to create the life you want.
I consider therapy a collaborative practice in communication and connection, and work with couples and individuals. My open-minded and accepting approach to therapy helps people heal trauma, process loss, manage stress, make strong decisions and better understand relationships. I draw from many different disciplines to treat the whole person. Welcoming and practical, my approach doesn’t depend on any specific philosophy—I get to know you, your needs and your goals—then tailor the experience to fit you and your life. My life’s work has focused on progressive and holistic education and wellness. Comfortable connecting with all types of people, I've counseled and taught in settings from farms to prisons to corporate offices. I started my practice in early 2015 while also developing an Emotional Intelligence curriculum that I teach to urban, high-tech professionals, start-ups, and corporations. I have an M.A. and Ed.M in Counseling Psychology from Columbia University with a focus in Multicultural Counseling. I have been trained in anti-racism and LGBT SafeZone, yoga and meditation, and strength-based interpersonal psychotherapy with Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) components. My specialization with couples is Emotionally Focused Therapy, for which I recommend first reading Sue Johnson's Hold Me Tight. I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in the state of New York and a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of Georgia.
My passion centers around guiding clients throughout the journey of life while assisting them in the cultivation of their dreams, ambitions, and goals. My approach to treatment begins through a compassionate lens of “person-in-environment”, the idea that an individual, couple, or family cannot be understood fully without respect for the various aspects of their social, familial, temporal, spiritual, economic, and physical environments. I enjoy working with a variety of populations: late-adolescents, young adults & adults, LGBTQ+, and executive professionals dealing with anxiety, depression, anger, grief & loss, trauma, and life-transitional issues. I also embrace working with men’s issues, high-achievers/perfectionists, and healthcare providers. As an African-American therapist I hold a strong commitment to enhancing the quality of life and empowering people of African ancestry through advocacy, human services delivery, and research. In both my personal and professional life, I am cultivating a mindfulness practice. Practicing mindfulness has allowed me to intimately connect with the present moment thereby enhancing my relationship between mind-body, with loved ones, and with nature. I find incorporating mindfulness-based cognitive behavioral interventions including Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness Based CBT (M-CBT), and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) to enhance the therapeutic process by cultivating non-judgemental awareness, compassion, and purpose. I apply these principles to the therapeutic relationship by cultivating a warm, non-judgmental environment, allowing clients to feel safe in connecting with the most intimate parts of themselves so that they may begin the healing process. My therapeutic philosophy incorporates trauma-informed approaches to therapy. Often times out of necessity, survivors of trauma need to disconnect from themselves (mind & body) to survive the most difficult and horrific experiences of their lives. Using this lens, my hope is to assist clients in healing the fractures of trauma by re-establishing the connection between their minds and bodies. In my personal life I am a husband, brother, and devoted dog-parent to my, pitbull-boxer mix, Maple. Georgia has been my home for over 16 years now but I still consider myself a native Chicagoan. During my spare time, hobbies I enjoy include: coaching & playing lacrosse, video games, weightlifting, and caring for my Bonsai tree collection. I offer a limited amount of reduced fee appointments to clients who cannot comfortably afford to pay the full fee for services. Isom E. White, LCSW is seeing clients in our Smyrna / Vinings location.

You wonder whether things are ever going to change. You’re overwhelmed, you're struggling to manage it all, and you're stuck. I specialize in getting people un-stuck. I know what it feels like to hate your body, spend every waking moment thinking about food, constantly comparing yourself to others, and dealing with the sadness associated with not 'fitting in'. Throughout my experiences working with adults and children, I've witnessed entire transformations that come only as a result of addressing both physical needs and our individual psychological hurdles. I'll work with you to find solutions and tackle stressors, including those caused by low self-esteem, depression, anxiety, chronic dieting, or relationships. As a Body Love Coach and Licensed Professional Counselor, I work to equip women and girls with the knowledge, tools, and support they need in order to ROCK regardless of their weight or body image. **I'm in-network for Amerigroup, Blue Cross Blue Shield/Anthem, CareSource, Humana, and Peach State. I also provide therapy virtually and in the community.
At Modern Path, we utilize evidence and strength approaches with a focus on individualized care. Each of us has specialties that reflect the unique needs of gender, sexuality, and relationship structure minorities.
