Hi everyone, my name is Emma Hickey and I am a recent graduate from Kennesaw State University's Master of Social Work program. My practice utilizes a client centered approach which focuses on and emphasizes client’s individual strengths and empowers clients to decide what is best for them. I help clients learn to integrate Cognitive Behavioral techniques to help identify the connection of thought, behavior, and emotion. I focus on interpersonal relationships and self-talk via storytelling. I incorporate narrative therapy techniques to empower clients to become the authors of their own stories. Additionally, I help clients learn and incorporate Dialectical Behavioral Therapy skills to provide in the moment relief to intense emotions.

I enjoy helping teenagers preparing for or adjusting to college. College can be a difficult transition. It brings with it a newfound independence, which can be overwhelming or intimidating. By helping students explore their identity and become more confident in themselves, I help them navigate this challenging time in order to experience all the excitement and rewards that college can bring. Additionally, if you struggle with perfectionism and self-criticism, I’m the kind of therapist who can help you learn to love and accept yourself, as you are, and be okay with asking for help when you need it!

I work with young women who are tired of feeling overwhelmed with recent changes in their life and want to regain control, so they are looking for a therapist who can understand their unique challenges and be "real" with them. You want to feel connected to yourself and your loved ones, but deep down are struggling to juggle the different aspects of your life or cope with challenging experiences that have occurred recently. Maybe you have trouble recognizing who you are today, feel crippled by anxiety most of the day or can't quite communicate your needs. But one thing is for sure: you’re ready for some relief. You’re ready to find the confidence in your decision making and connect with your environment better. Most of all, you’re ready to find joy in the day-to-day again. You’re ready for a new “normal,” and I can help you get there. As an experienced life transition and trauma therapist, I believe that every woman can find freedom from pressures that are often placed on us. My training in specific treatment modalities gives me the expertise you need to reconnect with yourself. You don’t have to continue feeling alone. She received her Master's Degrees in Elementary Education from Southern Connecticut State University and in Mental Health Counseling from Georgia State University. Melissa completed her practicum and internship at Ray of Hope, providing play therapy for children and individual and couples counseling for adults. She has worked with individuals to address mood and anxiety disorders, grief, and relationship issues. In addition to private practice, she has provided therapy in a university counseling center and at an outpatient recovery center for opioid addiction. As a counselor at the recovery center, she led a Women’s Self-Care group which addressed issues of physical and emotional well-being, co-dependency, healthy boundaries, and parenthood. In doing so, clients can address barriers and learn how to live at their full potential. She works from an eclectic approach, using Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) to explore thought and behavior patterns and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to help clients better manage their emotions and relationships. Clients come to therapy with their own goals and individual strengths and Melissa partners with her clients to navigate personal growth in a supportive, nurturing environment.

Everyone has an idea of what working with a therapist is like. I encourage my clients to enter our therapeutic relationship with an open mind. I want each of my clients to feel comfortable being themselves in our sessions. I emphasize to each of my clients that, while I may be direct, I am not rude, and I treat each of my clients with dignity and respect. While I ask that respect be reciprocated, I want to be clear that I am not easily offended and encourage clients to express themselves in the manner that feels most comfortable to them. I utilize a person-centered approach when working with new clients in an effort to increase their levels of comfort with me and with being in the therapy session. I pride myself on my ability to provide quality and competent therapeutic services in an inviting and relatable manner. I know that seeking mental health treatment for yourself or a loved one can be a harrowing process. I want to commend you for taking the first step in improving your mental wellness. This difficult first step will ultimately be a catalyst for positive change in your overall quality of life and I would be honored to be a part of your mental wellness journey!

Life can be hard. I get it. Especially when trying to balance the already difficult challenges of daily life and trying to be successful in higher education at the same time. Anxiety, family conflict, relationship problems, imposter syndrome, and other common problems are understandable concerns with everything today’s college student have to deal with. Adjustment to college by itself can be challenging, be it undergrad or even grad school. I believe I can help… I have a very down-to-earth, non-judgmental style and like to think that I am easy to talk to. I have over 20 years of experience in Mental Health and Higher Education. Therapeutically, I use an integrative approach that draws heavily on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Systems Theory, and is influenced by social justice frameworks. Professionally my interests include racially marginalized students, developmental concerns, family of origin concerns, relationship concerns, stress/anxiety induced academic performance issues, men’s issues, and imposter syndrome/sense of belonging. Outside of work, I consider myself a “Blerd”. I’m a serious movie/cinema buff. I’m also a fan of all things Comics and Sci-Fi/fantasy. I enjoy community service and cultural events. (Note: I can not accept current Emory University Students)

I have been counseling clients for over 25 years, helping people from all walks of life to overcome barriers to living a healthier and happier life. I have especially enjoyed working with college students who may struggle with increased levels of stress, anxiety or depression or have difficulty feeling comfortable and supported in this new environment. Whether you are struggling with addiction issues, depression, anxiety, anger, sexual identity issues, relationship issues, feeling overwhelmed by life's demands, or seeking a deeper sense of purpose and meaning, we can work together to find solutions. Life can be full of pain and struggle, but it is also full of beauty and inspiration. If you have become overwhelmed by the struggle, let's begin today to lighten your burden. I offer a safe, non-judgmental place for you to share your challenges and deepest needs. I believe you have the ability to succeed and thrive when given the right tools and support. I can help you manage overwhelming emotions more effectively, to recognize and change self-defeating patterns of thinking and behaving and to heal from past traumas. In a world that can be very isolating, we all need a place where we can feel deeply heard and understood. I have such gratitude for the help and support I received along the way in my own therapy to overcome challenges and become the best version of myself. I would love to give you this same gift and would consider it a privilege to share in your journey.

Let's TALK IT OUT, not TOUGH IT OUT. Toughing it out can lead you to suffer in silence, become more isolated, and possibly seek out negative or harmful ways to dull the pain. I encourage you to take the risk of being vulnerable in order to relive that pain as well as grow stronger and braver. Contact me today so we can start the journey of Talking it Out, in order for you to get on the path of living Happier, Healthier and Longer. My approach is to develop a meaningful and trusting relationship. It is through this relationship that pain is relieved and growth happens, and these "Emotional Corrective Experiences" will begin to have a positive impact on your life.
