Therapists for college students near Boulder, CO
Who I work with: - People who are fired up and ready to do this - “Refugees” from conventional eating disorder treatment who are ready to finally get to the root of the issue - Folks with some sass, fire, and rebelliousness (with a soft and sensitive core) - Quirky go-getters, nerds and misfits, and outsiders with undercover witchy tendencies - People who want better relationships, emotional resiliency skills, and a healthier relationship with food and their body - People who’ve tried talk therapy and have an inkling there’s something more: a deeper, more soulful connection to themselves and all their inner parts. *I welcome folks of all identities and sizes How I work: Is it frustrating for you when people tell you to “just let it go” or “be kinder to yourself”? As if there were some switch you could flip…if you just weren’t so stubborn / clueless / goofy. First up: there is no such switch. (If there were, someone would have patented it by now). Second up: suggestions like this, no matter how well-intentioned, almost never work. They can also leave us feeling frustrated and like failures. Self-compassion and emotional healing are trickier than most people (or cutesy magnets) would have you believe. Myth: Just talk through why you feel this way and you problem will vanish. Truth: Real healing takes more than head-knowing. It’s a whole-bodied affair. This is why typical talk therapy - where you come in, sit on a couch, share how you feel - often falls short. You leave feeling like "ok, I feel a little better, but now what?" So I work a little differently. Still talk, still insight, but more connection to body, intuition, and emotions. We get beyond the "why" and get to the actual "how" of real change. You can read more about my approach at www.stephaniesmallhealth.com. I’m a licensed clinical social worker and nutritionist. I received my BA from Yale University, my MSW from Smith College for Social work, and certificates in Holistic Nutrition Education and Mental Health Nutrition from Bauman College and the Academy for Addiction and Mental Health Nutrition. I ran the nutrition program at a substance abuse recovery center in Denver for two years and have trained in trauma therapy, internal parts work, somatic therapies, and more. I currently maintain a private practice online and in Boulder and Denver, CO, write for national and local publications, consult for mental health agencies and substance abuse recovery centers, and speak at live events.
I would like to tell you about my practice. I offer a warm, relaxed environment for exploring what may be difficult issues. It is my belief that your wisdom combined with my experience and openness can lead to a life of more joy and freedom. I have been working with individuals, couples, and groups in the counseling psychotherapy field since 1994. It has been a privilege and joy to watch so many couples find their way back to intimacy, so many individuals find relief in what may be tormenting them, so many others find joy and fulfillment in their lives. My approach to therapy is client-centered. I draw from humanistic psychology, somatic psychotherapy, existential psychology and philosophy, gestalt therapy and psychodynamic theories. Which simply means I work with the body, choices, and meaning making. I invite you into the room with me, all of you, including the aspects of yourself that you may have difficulties with. Therapy is a form of play where one experiments with ways of being. In doing this you begin to discover and ultimately let go of what is getting in the way of having a full rich and joyful life. You will discover a multitude of choices of how to approach life and relationships. You will find the opportunity to step into your freedom. This leads to more openness, presence, and creativity.

I believe being a student and learning is an opportunity, and sometimes having a consistent therapist alongside can make the difference and help you get the most out of the opportunity. Being in school is not a singular thing, it’s not just about being the student in class who does assignments and gets the grade. In addition to being a student, there is one’s mental, physical, and emotional health, there are often bills to pay, and often the needs of others to meet. There are many other parts of ourselves and our lives that intersect with and function together with being in school. It can be overwhelming. It can be an adjustment. Transitions are big and important. There are our lives both in and out of school. Students are often also family members, caregivers, working individuals, or living with loss, trauma, depression, stress, or a medical illness. Students also learn differently, including some with accommodations for success. Some students find they need to confront an overwhelming need for perfection, or perhaps one is facing a particular challenge that is important to look at rather than look away. Therapy can be helpful when you are in school. I like to meet a client where they are at and begin by understanding you. I offer my warmth, and capacity to listen and to hold space even when the workable feels unworkable. I offer my experience and knowledge in counseling and in the creative art therapies, and hold value in an inclusive and affirmative lens. I enjoy working with students in higher education, meeting them in the places where school intersects with other parts of self that must be given care and attention, or to look more closely at or develop one’s career journey. I employ both talk therapy and the use of creative, expressive processes such as movement, poetry, art, music, story, and metaphor. The work is collaborative between counselor and client, being open about therapy goals and progress. I place value on your inherent strengths, and believe that we all hold motivation and an innate capacity to heal and be the very best versions of ourselves. Hi, I'm Jonathan. I'm a down-to-earth, easygoing guy. Beyond that, I'm also a therapist. I often find myself working well with those hoping to get more out of life, whether that involves building confidence, developing good relationships, creating positive habits, understanding your identities, or adjusting to new life circumstances. I'll listen without judgment to really understand you, but also gently push you to be the best version of yourself. After all, we're here to solve problems and find solutions. While therapy can look a lot of different ways, I've found that transparency, humor, and consistency are a few of the key ingredients. Personally, I have felt how transformative therapy can be (despite my initial skepticism). My hope is to be able to offer that to others too. You can connect with me by phone, email, or my website to schedule a free consultation. Let's see if we're a good fit.
My approach is to connect with you, to meet you right where you are in your life. I won’t presume to know what’s right for you (it’s really you that’s the expert when it comes to what’s right for you.) Sometimes, confusion clouds your ability to find your way – that’s why you’re here… My experience and training will help guide you back to health and wellness. I’ll join you as you do the work, so that you’re not alone working your way back. I can see you clearly, even when you can’t. For me, it’s simply natural to relate to you in whatever state you are in. Life is sometimes messy, ugly, embarrassing, painful, or shameful – but I see more than what you are going through or feeling in the moment. I am good at joining with you in your struggles and will even hold hope when it’s hard for you to do so. Change is often hard and it’s my privilege to share in your journey toward a life filled with less anxiety, deeper meaning, more joy, and relationships that are healthy and secure.
Welcome and thank you for taking this first step toward becoming the best version of you! As a student, you already have some much to deal with without the added stress of anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, substance use issues, trauma/PTSD, grief and loss or whatever it is that you are currently dealing with. I am here to help carry some of that burden while we work toward the life you want, together. As a therapist, I value open, collaborative communication. You know yourself best and I am here to take your lead and support you in whatever capacity you need. I have experience and passion working with all the challenges listed previously. I look forward to starting this journey with you.
I work with many college students who are needing some support, guidance, and tools that can help them navigate their current life situation. I personally understand, from my own experience at college, some of the challenges and difficulties that can arise, so there is a lot of compassion and understanding for what you may be experiencing. I also have experience working with local students at CU. College can be exciting, fresh, and new. At the same, it puts us in completely new surroundings and situations. Overwhelm is natural. To any student who is considering therapy, I hope you know that overwhelm doesn't mean that something has gone wrong. It's normal when there are so many big changes taking place. My job is primarily to listen to you, and to really try to understand things from your perspective. This in itself is quite relieving: to be heard, seen, and understood. There's no reason for you to feel completely alone and isolated in your experience. Above all, you will find a supportive space in my practice for you to be at ease and be yourself. There are many wonderful counselors out there, and many not-so-good ones. My strong advice to you is to find a therapist who you really like, and don't stop looking for one until you find them. Before and during my own college experience, I had visited several counselors who I didn't have a real connection with. It wasn't until I was 22 that I found a counselor who I really connected with. Counseling should be a very positive experience. It is a huge resource in life. Trust yourself about what feels good to you - and go for it!

My goal for therapy is to work towards helping my clients find the strength and resilience needed to get through what life brings to the table. I am a certified EMDR therapist, though I use multiple therapeutic approaches with each client and tailor therapy to each individual's needs. I take great pride in building a strong therapeutic relationship with the clients I see, as I believe that is the foundation of therapy! I have experience working with adolescents, young adults, adults, and families as a whole. I love watching people grow throughout the therapeutic process, whether that entails mending strained relationships, working through trauma(s), embarking on a new journey, or finding personal strength. My passion to help others is what motivates me daily. It may be nerve wracking, overwhelming, and/or slightly uncomfortable, but just know that I am here to help, however I can. It can seem like a challenge to find a good therapist, but it is absolutely worth it to push forward until you find the best fit for you. I am licensed in New York, Colorado, Nevada, Florida, and South Carolina. Please note: I am not paneled with any insurance companies in Colorado, Florida, Nevada, or South Carolina.
Flatirons Recovery provides compassionate, mindfulness-based addiction treatment services. Our treatment team focuses on healing the whole individual, instead of focusing on one specific area of a person’s life that may be problematic. We do this by working with clients to develop action plans for relapse prevention, beginning to heal trauma, learning skills for more successful coping with mental health challenges, eating healthier, getting more consistent exercise, and having fun in recovery.
We are starving to discover the truth, to show the world who we really are, and we need to have our truth held with compassion. We all want to experience being fully seen. We want to feel connected to others. Sadly, many of us don’t often experience being seen in a non-judgmental light. My strength as a therapist is in my capacity to recognize your preciousness and your capacity for wholeness, while helping you to align with your truth. I work with individuals, couples, families, children, adolescents, and groups to heal past wounds and evolve out of patterns of self-sabotage. Throughout our work I will support you in cultivating self-compassion, resilience and empowerment. I focus on the impact of trauma, and a variety of disorders including anxiety, depression, insomnia, personality disorders, eating disorders and chronic pain issues. Within a trusting therapeutic relationship, my clients and I co-create a foundation which allows clients to hone into their intuition, improve their relationships, decrease emotional suffering, and increase their overall joy. I use a mindfulness-body-centered approach, integrating many modalities, cultural responsiveness and evidenced-based research.

Hi, I’m Shannon Gavin, LCSW. I made the move to Colorado in 2020, right after earning my master's degree in Social Work. Since then, I've had the opportunity to work with a broad range of mental health challenges, which has helped me develop a flexible and personalized approach to therapy. I don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all method. Instead, I tailor each therapeutic approach to fit the unique needs and personality of the individual I’m working with. You can expect a laid-back and approachable atmosphere when we work together, but I’m also direct and straightforward when the situation calls for it. My focus is on empowering you while providing a warm and supportive space where you can feel safe to explore your feelings. Whether you've experienced inpatient behavioral health care or are seeking outpatient therapy, I bring experience and genuine care to every session. I’m here to support your journey and help you find practical, meaningful ways to improve your mental well-being.

Everyone reaches a point in life when they need to make a change. Sometimes we feel stuck and need perspective in finding our own strengths and some new resources. I am in this work because I believe in change and that in pain, there is room for growth and reconnection with what feels most important. Finding a way to work through a traumatic experience, a stressful life transition or confronting long-time challenges can be an overwhelming task. I can join you in the effort. In meeting primarily with individuals, I approach this work with honesty, humility and warmth with the broader goal of providing empirically sound, non-judgmental therapeutic support.
