Dr. Rethel Gill
My training in community mental health settings was an incredible experience as I worked with people battling depression, anxiety, PTSD, and trauma. I have also worked with clients convicted of sexually abusive behaviors. However, I am quite versatile, and I have worked with people needing help in many areas of their lives. I am a psychodynamically trained psychologist. I also believe in using an integrated approach when helping someone to understand the how and why of what got them to this point in their life. I have found that an integrative approach to therapy works best. If a client has a non-Western approach to coping with life issues, that can be integrated into the treatment. I adapt my approach to what is best suited for you the client. It is my goal to build a therapeutic relationship with you by creating a safe and healing environment where you feel safe to explore your thoughts, feelings, and emotions. I have worked with many diverse populations from people who practice Native American spirituality, to people with a Yogic flavor to their approaches to life, to working with those in underserved communities. I have worked with people from all cultural backgrounds. I also have worked with people with diverse sexual orientations. I am a therapist at Octave, a behavioral health practice creating a new standard for mental health care that’s both high-quality and accessible. In helping people, I lean toward a strengths-based, attachment, and systems approach. I strongly believe that a significant change in one person can impact the entire system. I also believe that a holistic, mindfulness and cognitive approach coupled with behavioral changes is effective for many clients. Additionally, I interweave my trauma-informed background to support clients through their presenting concerns. It's my strong belief, however that each individual is a unique being. I thoroughly enjoy partnering with my clients throughout the therapeutic process while addressing their objectives for therapy. Ultimately, I believe in the power of connection. The relationships we have with others influence our health, thoughts, feelings, or stories we tell about ourselves. I am passionate about cultivating a healing connection to help individuals perceive their greatest selves so they know that they matter. I approach therapy from an integrative standpoint, using evidence-based therapy modalities that best suit the individuals, couples, or groups with whom I am working. I find the exploratory techniques espoused in Psychodynamic models to be core to and underpinning a great deal of my practice. Psychodynamic work, for me, provides a solid foundation of knowledge on which to base my understanding of my client, and it is the basis from which I tailor subsequent interventions, including the use of alternate models. As needed - and very much also a primary model of therapy I will default to - is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. The affording of structure, the ease of understanding of interventions, and the strong evidence-based support for this model make integrating it into the work an almost seamless task. As needed I also use Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, and, for trauma, I also employ the techniques of Cognitive Processing Therapy. As needed, I pull from both Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Dialectical Behavior Therapy. I am especially interested in assisting clients through major life transitions: adolescent to adult, individual to family, parent to empty nest. I create a treatment plan specific to each client’s unique life situation and personal goals, and I believe in meeting my clients where they are in life in order to address the issues most critical to them. My approach is goal-oriented and solution-focused, and I believe that a collaborative approach works best for those seeking guidance for a better balanced, more fulfilling life. My approach to therapy is a combination of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which helps change negative thought patterns, and Interpersonal Therapy, which helps clients discover patterns in their life that have kept them from realizing their full potential. I am a therapist at Octave, a behavioral health practice creating a new standard for mental health care that’s both high-quality and accessible. Therapy that encourages and empowers Guiding Healing versus Treatment Do you feel alone? Like the world is burning? In today's day and time, it is hard to cope with the day to day. We have political overwhelm as well as climate overwhelm. I hear you. I see you. I don't promise to have all of the answers but I promise to meet you where you are as a human being. I am here to help you cope and provide a nonjudmental and safer space to process your experiences. I will help you learn how to be present in your body and identify what subtle messages your body might be telling you. Clients often describe my "superpower" as being a calming, gentle presence for my clients. You will be the expert of your experience and I am here as a guide. I aim to encourage and empower you to be your authentic self. My therapy style includes the belief that we all live within larger systems that have significant impacts on our physical, financial, mental, and emotional well being. In addition to clinical trauma work, I am a registered yoga teacher. My approach is grounded in the idea that trauma is stored in our bodies and requires more than just talk therapy. I am passionate about helping queer and gender non conforming clients live their most authentic selves with kindness. My experience includes providing therapy to individual adults, typically in the 18-45 age range. My practice is trans affirming and I have experience providing Gender Affirmation Surgery letters. I enjoy working with individuals struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, life transitions, and identity issues. I provide kink and poly/CNM informed therapy and have both clinical and lived experience with religious trauma. I’m a sex positive and fat positive clinician. I actively engage in personal and clinical work to provide a safer space for all humans and bodies. I use an anti-racist, person-centered, and trauma-informed lens. It is my opinion that therapy should be collaborative and non pathologizing.
